Welcome to the site and the project.

Currently your Prime95 is testing the number M56868611 which means 256,868,611 - 1, which has 17,119,158 digits: https://mersenne.org/M56868611

It is running a double check which means the number has been tested once before back in 2013:
Quote:
Unverified 2013-03-13 linded CCF1D7F623D2D9__ 49355380
It is 92.72% done so soon it will reach the end and hopefully the final "residue" (which is the final number from the calculation) should match "CCF1D7F623D2D9__" which is the result of the first computation in 2013. The __ is hiding 2 digits which also needs to match.

It is good to run at least one double check on a new computer in the project to check that it works properly.

In Prime95 you can see which kind of work it is currently setup to test:
Click the menu "Test" - "Worker Windows" and in the "Type of work to get" you can choose what type of work it should work on next.

First, Welcome to the forum and the GIMPS project.

Your computer right now is checking to see if 256868611-1 is prime. Because this computer is new to the project, it was assigned to Double Check this number. Another computer did this number years ago and we need to double check it, in case there was an error. If the result that your machine produces matches the other machine, we know that it is not prime with great certainty. If your result (the residue, the last 'remainder' as it were) does not match, then we will get another machine to check until we get 2 that match.

It is important to check all new machines like this to detect ones that are not reliable. The computer may work ok for normal uses, but Prime95 uses your computer in ways that can expose problems that normal uses won't.

The type of test that you are doing is commonly called by us an LL here. That is short for Lucas-Lehmer. Once the test is complete (it has to run all the way to the end, it does not produce a result in the middle), if the residue is all zeros, the number is prime. We always double and triple check numbers reported prime with different kinds of computers and software to be extra certain that there is no errors in the type of machine or the software.

Once your computer has proved itself good with a few double checks, it will/may get assigned other work (depending on what type of work you may have opted for.)

First, you have to test a number that your machine shows to be a prime. The chances of that are very low. Of the 5216954 numbers tested so far, only 51 are prime.

If you do find a prime, the number has to be verified and other information gathered (making sure that everything is good legally). And after that an prize award can be made. It will take at least a month, maybe 6 or more.

This is a volunteer effort. I have been working for many years on it. I have donated computer time and my time to the effort. Some people even buy computers just to help. And they do it for the fun, not even hoping to get money of a prize. It is enough to know that they helped.

So, no, you only get money if you find a prime.

One simple analogy is that this is like a lottery.
  • if you don't buy a ticket, you surely won't win anything. And won't lose anything.
  • If you do buy a ticket (in this case, pay a bit of electric bills for a while), you may win! But very likely you may not.
You simply need to enjoy the game, the process itself, maybe feel "the luck". Or else you will likely quit because what is the point of doing something that you don't enjoy?

One thing for sure - this is not a job. Or an investment where you are sitting and counting your dividends as time goes.
