August 2027 Additional prediction: this will not be discovered by humans or their machines but communicated to us, along with the higher Mersenne Primes M52 through M239, in addition to confirming our discoveries up to M50, by an alien intelligence visiting our planet at that time. |

edit: To expand on this topic, suppose a time machine were invented, and a person uses it to go back 50 years to 1968. The time machine is destroyed soon after, and people think he's crazy after he explains things like the Internet and smartphones to them. He then says that his civilization was able to discover M50. Would anyone believe his claim that 2^77,232,917-1 is prime? Last fiddled with by MooMoo2 on 2018-01-04 at 03:54 |

Would you/he remember all the exponents? How many of you are knowing all the exponents of the largest 25 known mersenne primes by heart? (those discovered after the '60s). Assuming he can tell them few of the smaller exponents, they will believe him, after checking. They knew how to check in the '60s, of course, and they also knew the "largest known" prime to be something like 2^11213-1 for which they made a stamp, if I remember right the history... Or maybe you already did that and your name is either Donald Gillies or Alexander Hurwitz... (this would explain why there are only two guys that discovered 5 primes in more than 10 years, with not interpose, hehe...
