After playing around a bit more, I've found that on my i5 6600 systems with DDR4-2133, a single worker delivers more throughput than two.

I suspect that may be due to the relatively small 6 MB of L3 cache.

Please forgive me for this, but have you read The Science of Discworld?

An important point of the whole book is "Lies we tell children" while they learn.

And, the truth is, no adult alive today actually know how far down physics goes. It might actually be unknowable.

Not meaning to take away from your work in any way. Quite to the contrary.

I've read a couple of the novels but not that book.

The difference in throughput was not that great: less than 1%. Running a single worker has another advantage: managing the many worktodo.txt files is easier.
