The officer is on "administrative leave." The two deputies have indeed been suspended, though not in the way you suggest.

Alas, public reaction might not be as you imagine. A lot of folks may well think the guy deserved the beating.

Salon conveniently leaves out, the reports that SHE had been observed firing upon the officers earlier. Local affiliate report. Yahoo MSN Right now, detail of what happened is clear as mud. Wait for what the forensics supports & contradicts. The audio on the Yahoo embedded video though contains ~10 seconds of fire that sounds as rapid as popping popcorn, pretty grim. After a 15 second lull, it resumes at a lower rate for a while.
What's definite though, is there's a boy who lost his entire immediate family swiftly; mother murdered by father, then father and sister dying in a shootout with law enforcement. Pretty nearly the worst-case divorce scenario. Worst case would be the boy was along.
At least one law enforcement vehicle was reported disabled by gunfire from the Amber Alert vehicle, and another took multiple hits through the windshield, which seems pretty convincing indication of multiple attempts at murder of a law enforcement officer during the street chase.
Looks like the father was quite determined not to be taken alive.

It is exceedingly unlikely that the cops would have been armed had this happened in the UK.

UK response after the first shots fired at pursuit vehicles I'm guessing would have been from this segment: https://www.eliteukforces.info/police/ "All UK territorial constabularies deploy armed officers in spontaneous and pre-planned interventions." For when stern words don't have the desired effect of stopping an armed combatant, or multiple.

By which time other approaches would undoubtedly have been applied. In particular, it would have been a long time before the woman would have been shot, if at all.

At least, by law officers. For all I know, her father could have shot her.

One thing - she was reported to have been wearing body armor and a tactical helmet. That indicates to me that she was a participant, rather than a kidnap victim.
