Why do things like this always happen on days none of my computers are sending in results? It would be nice to have at least a few hours of slightly founded but ultimately false hope.

For all we know there are indeed 2 (or maybe more) unverified primes. Manually cranking the displayed number back to 1 is just to stop us looking for the second prime and then "they" can test it in privacy.

Happy news. This is not a false alarm. A second new Mersenne prime has been reported! Verification is underway.

I've asked for the last save file and hope to have it tomorrow. I'll rerun the last few thousand iterations - if that shows this is our second prime in two weeks it is virtually guaranteed this is not a false positive.

The Primenet report is now showing 1 unverified prime for reasons I'd rather not go into just yet.

The second prime was first noticed by DasIon at 1:18 p.m. PDT, which equates to 20:18 UTC.

Assuming that the earliest report of the prime was at 20:00 UTC, these are the potential candidates (excluding double checks):

By the way, welcome to the GIMPS forum, DasIon. Great first post.

Edit: does anyone notice something strange about M43021553? Its residue has only one hexadecimal digit.

There is the fake residue!

[edit]Kills the theory about putting fakes on smaller numbers (unless the code has been changed in the last few days). A frustrating lack of information to go on![/edit]

The residue for M40643117 also looks a bit suspicious.
