Account disabling mystery

Is there any good reason why accounts of some
active users within this forum including
"R.D. Silverman", "em99010pepe" have been
deactivated? "em99010pepe" coming under name of
"Carlos Pinho" and then posting with some
information... Thus, what is going on over here?

Already too suspicious enough.

The question is completely appropriate, even if individual details are confidential. I'm certainly curious myself, when I read perfectly appropriate posts and notice that the poster, a familiar user, is "banned".

I didn't know that bans and things were temporary..that makes lots more sense.

As for Mr Silverman, well, his name is on seminal papers in computational number theory, but he is far more patient waiting for our computers to find his factors and mersenne numbers than he is with even reasonably well-informed questions. Couple that with a random somewhat annoying forum member that might not know when to quit or be a complainer, and, well, the result is easy to predictable with reasonable certainty. I wonder if this is where our fractional annoying forum members come from?

I hope you would understand that the moderators (and I'm not one of them) would not react well to someone skirting a ban by creating another account, or especially a third one, and probably doing the same kind of thing. It's very disrespectful.

Also, pepe in the username sounds like slang for the male sex organ, at a guess in italian, and you should know how squeamish we Americans are about that.

Finally, insulting NPLB on this forum is the moral equivalent of denouncing Chairman Mao in public in Mainland China, some time before his death. The consequences have to be expected, especially if you flaunt getting away with it. I may not be contributing to NPLB, but the project is no crazier than looking for the next Mersenne Prime, or factoring M1061.

Let me shed some light on this.
The user in question http://www.mersenneforum.org/member.php?u=1322 has been on this board since 2004 and has over 2500 posts. So he has no excuse for regarding knowledge of the board culture and rules. One of those rules is "family friendly".

He changed his avatar to one that was not "family friendly". It was quite intentional and flagrant. I don't know who may have noticed this. I did and PM'ed 2 'staff members' (read super-mod, etc.) about this. Here is the complete text of my message:

I think em99010pepe may need to be counseled about his avatar. It does not look to be 'family friendly'.

One of them called it 'a bit over the top'.

I suspect that he resisted any call to better behavior.

Yeah, I finked on him and would do it again.

He reinstated the avatar after his first ban ended. Since once again he did not respond to a request via PM to change it, he was banned once again.

Odd...I thought that cooperating with reasonable requests from the mods was one of the UNWRITTEN rules...I don't find the mods here at all unreasonable.

Anyway, thanks for the light...much better than my guessing....see my comment above about how his username comes across to a native speaker of English that has studied some european languages...and been to a few non-"family friendly" internet sites I can't discuss here. We are, fortunately or otherwise, not der Stern or der Spiegel...
