I've noticed that the 500 series GPUs are quite expensive. What's the best 400 series Nvidia GPU for number-crunching purposes?

470 is more powerful, but is also hungry for power. I read that 560 should be the best choice. Luigi |

I recently installed a 1GB EVGA GTX 460 SSC in a Dual Core Intel E5700 setup and have been pleasantly surprised with how quiet it is.
Even when the GPU load is 99% the fan doesn't have to go above 50% to keep the temp at about 65 degrees. Two instances of mfaktc have the CPU and GPU at 100% producing maybe 130 to 150Ghz-Days per day. cudalucas did a double check on 26238437 in about 60 hours, which seems roughly equivalent to to how long the E5700 would take. I just thought I'd add - I bought 2x GT430s for some ex-corporate systems.
They aren't flash, but they were ideal for the situation. I bought some cheap corporate Core2 Duo systems for about $150 each. The power supply was only 200W. They had custom fitting power supply in the case, so I couldn't replace the power supply. It was also a low profile case. It really wasn't worth me buying a new case and a new power supply. But buying a GT430 did the job. The power requirements are small - it doesn't need those 6/8-pin power cables. It gets all it's power from the pci express port. It's suits a low profile case. GT430 does around 35-40 GHz-days/day on mfaktc. Faster than single socket CPU only system. It's not the fastest GPU on the block, but may suit someone's situation. ...and did I mention they are cheap. -- Craig |

How's your noise level on the 430? I've got a 440 ($90 us) since it didn't push the original PS on this box. I think the 440 can do 90GHz days/day, but it's a bit noisy....and definitely warm...

There's the GT520 out - and you can get completely passively cooled versions. Completely silent. -- Craig |

A bit noisy = I can hear it in the other room, acceptable.....I'm waiting to find out what a GT480 sounds like, have one of those available as soon as we ensure we have power supply and monitor and cables available.

On further thought on the GT440: The slow, periodic changes in tone and volume due to fan speed changes bother me more than the absolute volume. Any way to set the fan speed to a minimum, which should be more than sufficient, and above that annoying mid-frequency peak?

You should keep an eye on the temperatures if you lock the fan settings and disable the automatic fan control: Over the time the cards will collect dust and this will lead to higher temperatures if the fan speed is locked. Last fiddled with by Ralf Recker on 2011-05-22 at 09:14 |

I was looking for a quiet GPU upgrade that can do some GIMPS work. Currently on a passively cooled 7600GS. Looking at
http://www.dabs.ie/products/gigabyte...?refs=55040000 or http://www.dabs.ie/products/asus-gef...?refs=55050000 or even: http://www.dabs.ie/products/asus-gef...?refs=55050000 Which card would be the best bang for buck? Is a 520 even worth the GPU output? I like it because it is passively cooled. |
