If you’re using Windows, see this post. Jeff Gilchrist’s site has several older versions of many of the general factoring tools. It will at least get you started.

If you’re using Linux, see EdH’s excellent “how to” folder, which tells you how to locate, download and compile the various tools.

I just went there and his download links appear to be acting up today.

-- Has anybody heard from Jeff Gilchrist lately to ask him about that?
-- Would yafu be a reasonable alternative to the alpertron site for ECM?

I just downloaded yafu and it's a big improvement over alpertron for speed. It should work pretty well for now.

Thanks

Yes yafu has many options. Browse the ReadMe file.
- it is multi-thread, even for ECM, see -threads
- it can do only ECM work, I think -ecmonly
- if you know a number has previous work done and you want to start at a higher "t" level, see -work
- for smaller numbers you can go all the way through SIQS or NFS by stating "factor(n)", or start at "siqs(n)" or "nfs(n)"
(Maybe single quotes on a Windows box.)
(For NFS you will also need the sievers installed - like numbers above 95 digits.)

Why didn't you set make command to run with -j$(nproc) argument so it uses all my cpu cores while compiling?

I am looking for the best executable I can get of ECM 6.4.4 to run in Windows on a modern processor. It is needed for running aliquet. My computer is an I7-10700, 8 cores / 16 threads. I'd also like it to eventually run on a Ryzen 3950X, 16 cores / 32 threads.

The only executable I was able to find here and anywhere else was for a Haswell. I don't know enough about older processors to know if that is very effective for this machine. I feel like it is running somewhat slower than what I'm used to but I don't know if that is related to the fact that it is an older version of ECM or if I'm running a somewhat ineffective version of ECM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
