You could realistically run a system without those two, sure. wc is in coreutils, and sed is likely close to universal. Damn Small Linux is the most minimal Linux I've ever tried to run (it's Live CD-only and runs on a 486), but I never ran anything useful on it, so I don't know what its capabilities are.

In principle, it should be possible to get running through the linux-term prompt within win10, but I imagine it's a bear to make that happen. I think you're stuck with the software you've got.

Is there any word on how CADO-NFS would run in an Ubuntu virtual machine under windows? I know I couldn't ever get GPU stuff to work in a VM, but CPU packages should work. I have no Windows machines to try a VM, unless I tried an Ubuntu VM in a Windows VM and I don't have any current Windows VMs.

Henryzz has managed to get CADO running in WSL2. There are some symlinks which need fixing, see this thread. Not sure if there are any further difficulties.

On the recent Debian WSL2 (and also WSL "1") version, I had no problems compiling the recent CADO-NFS and version 2.3.0 after installing needed packages. I did not need to change symlinks etc.

Running it in a VM would be straight forward, of course. But for me, WSL(2) was always handier. Of course native Linux is still preferable if possible.

Getting CUDA etc. to work is whole other story...

Thanks for all of the info. guys. It looks like I won't be attempting to use CADO in Windows. :-)

@gd_barnes:

There is another alternative to run linux with your present computer.

I have run some of my machines from SD cards and USB thumb-drives. You could create a linux USB drive with all the factoring associated programs and boot up from the USB drive to run those programs.

An upside would be that nothing would be touching the Windows drive unless you wanted it to.

A downside would be that during the factoring, you wouldn't be able run any normal Windows applications.

If you do try this, I would suggest at least a 32GB device.
