Choice of application depend on software, hardware, computation type, and exponent. I've intentionally left off ECM since it has long been a nonfactor in advancing the GIMPS wavefronts relevant to finding the next prime or insuring none were missed.
Wow, did this thread get hijacked quick, from best practices to layout. Last fiddled with by kriesel on 2020-01-17 at 06:49 |

Horse hockey is a sport using a frozen organic fertilizer puck produced by a horse. Bull pucky is organic fertilizer produced by a male bovine. Yes I looked them up online. I think I'll leave them out of the reference threads glossary.

Hello,
I have a local PC that I use only 20% of the time, and the rest of the time I use Prime95 with the default settings. Can anyone help me optimize the configuration, taking in consideration that it has these characteristics: - CPU intel i9-9900K 3.60GHz (8 cores) - 32 GB RAM - GPU NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 (I understand there is no optimization for GPU?) - Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Thanks a lot, Viorel |

Hi there and welcome to the fry. (adică bine ai venit, mâncați-aș..., hihi).
P95 doesn't run in a GPU, but you can look to other dedicated packages, like gpuOwl for PRP and P-1 work, or mfaktc for TF. You can run them in parallel, P95 using the CPU and mfaktc using the GPU. If you decide to do TF, and if you run windoze, then look at Misfit too (which organizes/automatizes your TF work, gets assignments, report results, etc). Available GIMPS client software Available client management software For Intel CPU, probably prime95 or Mlucas. Some background re running on IGP by model is here. An RTX 2080 is better used in TF by mfaktc, but could run P-1 or PRP in Gpuowl. Get the 2047M GpuSieveSize version of mfaktc (and tune it), or Gpuowl V6.11-380 or 7.2-86, depending on what you want to run. Cloud computing choices are here, halfway down the page of the reference info index. Generally these apps can be left run in the background 24/7 and don't interfere with interactive use of the machine. Prime95 initial default settings sacrifice its own performance in favor of that, and may need adjustment, especially increasing memory usage allowed. When installing and tuning GPU applications, run them manually first, then optionally add the complication of client management software such as Misfit, after the base application such as mfaktc is known to be installed and working properly.
