The first singleton removal pass has the worst memory use of all the filtering steps, though it's odd that such a small reallocation failed on a machine with so much memory.

Probably caused by memory fragmentation and lack of a garbage collector.
Realloc requires contiguous memory.

Yup, BTDT. 32-bit Windoze was notorious for it.

Is this the latest SVN? Paul Zimmermann found a bug in v1.50 that caused crashes for memory allocations that crossed a 2GB boundary...
