Default Misc Questions

I have a few basic questions I would appreciate any info on.

Are there fast parallel implementations of the GIMPS (LL Test) algorithm? Once a Mersenne Prime is found by a regular machine running Prime95, how is it verified quickly?

What are the uses for Mersenne Primes? I've heard they can be used in psuedo-random number generators. Are there any other uses?

Thanks in advance!

There are some multi-threaded implementations of L-L. And since these can run on multi-processor systems they can run faster than Prime95. Running on a single processor, though, nothing beats Prime95 for squeezing every last bit of speed out of each MHz.

The verification has to be done in a different hardware platform and using different software. At least after M39 was discovered, the verifications have been done using Guillermo Ballester Valor´s Glucas program and Ernst Mayer´s mlucas, on different hardware platforms. The Glucas program has recently gone multithreaded, which allowed it to verify M41 really fast (check GIMPS Home Page). The verifications normally start immediately after the new prime is discovered. George Woltman contacts some potential doublecheckers and sends them the exponent to test. The rest of us consume only brain power trying to guess the new candidate as accurately as possible...

Jinydu and I collaborated on M41 and had it figured out well in advance. So the brain power was well-consumed.
