Many view pre-knowledge of the find as a perk. The alternative is reading about it in the newspaper or hearing about it on slash.dot and saying to yourself "Hey, I contribute tons of CPU cycles to GIMPS and I have to find out at the same time as every other Joe Blow, what's up with that?"

Of course, we could take a poll....

I dont think there is a need for a poll, just because of impatience.
You hit the nail right on the head George, it's a perk that makes sense since it's unlikely to be composite.

PS My avatar is bigger than your avatar! nah naah...

Yes, but the largest known prime of the form shown in George's avatar dwarfs the largest-known of the form in your avatar. It's the old "substance vs. hype" thing.

Yes, because of the monopoly.

If I had as many members working for as long as the GIMPS project it may be a different story.

You are just pure hype ewmayer!
I was just kidding then you make a dumb comment like that.... whatever

OK, back to the new prime...

So if it does turn out to be a new prime after the double-check, how long will it take to get an article written??

Unlike trif, my wife had our daughter 30 days early, so I haven't had to deal with such suspense before. ;)

Of course I was just teasing TTn - my "smiley-winky" emoticon key just happened to be stuck. [Whack!] There...that's better. ;)

What's false about it? And if you really believe that, why are you here?

George's double-check using Prime95 will finish tomorrow. If his run indicates primality, I'm quite sure he and Scott will start work on the article/press release at that time, assuming they haven't done so already. Once the independent-hardware-and-software runs finish, they can go to press immediately.

Or did you mean a formal journal article? There won't be one of those until a 10M digit prime is discovered, at which point the rules of the EFF prize will require a formal article to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

So many informations around, shouldn't everybody be able to determine the new candidate? 8)

Well, you can't know for sure, of course. But all put together... :D

No no, I just meant the press release for this prime :) . Just trying to figure how much longer the rest of us will be in suspense :( .
