What is it with cats and boxes? I had a calico that could fit herself into a regular size shoebox. The ginger I have now has never shown any interest in a box.

It's thought they feel more secure in enclosed spaces, from larger predators. Whatever the algorithm is, it's defective, since they've been found to prefer even taped rectangles on a hard floor.

The calico I had, she would sleep on her back in the middle of the floor with nothing close by. I had to be careful with her. She had a tendency to lay down right behind my heels if I was doing something in the kitchen. She would do the same thing if I was walking behind her. Just drop where she was.

The ginger I have now, he will always relax on top or under something. Table, chair, my desk. Nowhere out in the open where he can be stepped on. I've stepped on his tail and a front foot, to date. Oh, did I ever hear about it.

Many years ago our bed was a divan with drawers inside it. Our cat Brni would open a drawer, climb inside, and then turn on her back so she could walk it shut again. Completely enclosed and safe from predators.

Most of the time our cat sleeps on the couch, on a desk, on my son's bed, or in a sunny spot she can find on the floor somewhere.

If she's upset however, she finds small enclosed spaces to sleep in, preferably just barely big enough for her to curl up in. When she starts doing this we know it's time to take her to the vet to find out what's wrong.

That may be a clever cat, when she wants to go to the vet, zzuummm into a box!
