The Unhappy Me thread

Woke up at 04:40 this morning to go to the bathroom. Instant agony in my right foot but managed to reach my destination and back to bed by shuffling on the left foot and holding on tight to walls, furniture, door frames, etc.

Didn't get to sleep again. No GP service until Tuesday because of holidays so rang 111 (for non-UK readers, think 911-lite for medical matters only) who, after two levels of triage, sent me to hospital.

Addenbrookes have declared some sort of critical situation for emergency care in non immediately life-threatening cases with likelihood of long delays but they still managed to see me quite quickly. By this time my foot was swollen, hot, dusky dark pink / purple coloured and still very painful, so they fed me 30mg of codeine which helped quite a lot. Everyone was worried about a cellulitis infection, of course.

X-rays and blood tests ruled out mechanical and bacteriological problems. Despite its known unreliability for common false negatives and positives, one of the tests was for uric acid.

Consensus: severe gout. Treatment is to swallow lots of codeine and naproxen for several days, lay off red {wine,meat} and cheese, and not to walk around much until the pain subsides.

Oh well. It all adds interest to an otherwise largely tedious existence.

I've heard the FBI can determine the identity of hit-and-run drivers by analyzing paint chips. UK law enforcement agencies can probably do the same.

London being what it is, there are probably five cameras and a license plate reader that have caught the whole thing.

Good luck on your drive Carlos, hopefully you've seen the end of your bad luck period.

Also, just because I'm an American and had to Google it myself:

lorry: a large, heavy motor vehicle for transporting goods or troops; a truck.

I knew it was a large vehicle, but I was also considering the possibility it was a bus. And the troops part adds to the confusion, do they sit Indian style on the floor or can a lorry also be a bus?

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that. Have as pleasant a horizontal Easter as you can manage and I hope it gets better for the summer.

I would never have considered that lorry was a word only used in the UK not the USA. You need to stop losing words from our language.

Has been increasingly unreliable for couple of years but still not dead. Waiting to finish university to get a new pc(and for avx512).

This is a somewhat unusual presentation for gout (not that I don't believe their diagnosis especially in the setting of elevated uric acid in the serum). Did they entertain the idea of Doppler ultrasound? Has color returned and swelling gone down? How is the pain? Are xanthine oxidase inhibitors or colchicine in your future?
