I think I can infer that it says 2^p-1 . Just like that...no actual superscript.

I can't really 'resolve' the characters...I can just kind of see their shape. It may be because the background is so deep and the characters so narrow, there's no overlap available for your eyes to see the background.

A little better. I think if you brought the background of the characters close to the foreground, you'd be able to focus on them easier.
