I resonate with what I /think/ you are arguing.

My problem with the thought experiment is when you introduce into the equations having serious firepower in the hands of those not terribly well trained. And/or, not terribly sane.

Thankfully, I don't actually have any skin in this game. But I have many friends who have to deal with this.

The Dutch commandos were in the US for training at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center.

Looks like they got some real-life training in urban warfare, US style. There was a previous altercation which police believe led to the shooting.

That's why we have the right to keep and bear arms - to settle arguments! And to protect ourselves against foreigners who talk funny, of course.

Apparently there were plenty of witnesses. There have been no arrests so far.

But don't worry, everything is going to be fine.

This AP story has the following curious bit of circumspection:

Police, however, released no additional information Monday about the circumstances of the shooting nor made any police officials available for interviews. No arrests have been announced.

The agency said in a statement that detectives were working to identify those involved in the shooting and that "the release of certain investigative information could negatively impact the ability to obtain justice in this case."

This BBC story has something that may help explain:

The city's mayor told reporters on Monday that the attack may have been a drive-by shooting.

"As I understand it there was a scuffle - a kerfuffle - at a bar and the Dutch guardsmen had returned back to their hotel," said Mayor Joe Hogsett.

Here in the good ol' USA, drive-by shootings are usually done by street gangs. And with crimes committed by street gangs, witnesses often say they saw nothing, heard nothing, know nothing. If they give statements, they might come down with galloping amnesia if they are called upon to testify in court. If they don't disappear or wind up in the morgue.

And if local business are able to supply enough security footage to support a prosecution, they better have their fire insurance paid up...

UPDATE: Police made an arrest Tuesday afternoon. The suspect has been charged with murder, and is being held without bail.
