Default Throwing the hammer

I know this could just as well be in the "athletics" thread,
but I used to wonder how every competitor, after rotating about 7 times, managed to send it in the right direction
(safety cage notwithstanding).

I've solved this simple puzzle now.
Can you?

David

Yes, I know that comes into it, but if you or I were going to
try it after (say) 5 attempts, why might we still get the direction right?

The ball/hammer is on its highest point when facing the right direction?

Clearly some fancy footwork is necessary, but IMO the
guiding principle is to start the ball orbiting in the appropriate
inclined plane, using the first three rotations with feet stationary.
