I'm asking because I might try to break the record for the largest Octoproth. Carlos |

For me the second goal of the project is to get all free numbers up to 5000T
![]() The third goal is to extend the search beyond n=1000 to ? . I suggest 2000. You are welcome to discuss with me your wishes. Ps. and also improve the client ![]() |

Let me find an octo on n=999 then I will help you clean all n up to 1000T. About the client I don't have the skills to help you out only for telling you my wishes on how the client should behave in terms of its management. To add more machines to this project I need the client to be run on the system tray or hidden, not on a DOS box. Carlos

I really can't understand the interest of this project, care to explain to me?
I ran it for fun and to see my name in the reservation thread. Carlos |

I don't know what the real goals of this are project are, I honestly don't know. I only volunteered to help advance the project. Nobody is forcing you to participate into this project. Last fiddled with by ValerieVonck on 2007-01-27 at 22:41 |

Guys
There are two worthwhile goals 1. the most important is to find the largest octo, there are bragging rights about this. 2. To find an octo for each n, this is recreational I had wondered why you wanted to go up to 1000T for each n, it seems that there are so many smaller octos that they are no longer interesting, except to a statistician But please agree amongst the two of you, it is a rather small group at te moment, occasionally interest flares up in ths project (it has died three times in the past) and finding the largest octo should get people interested again |

Robert,
First, I want to fill all the holes that are left open. No more no less, then we can get higher. 1000T seems to me, for the open numbers a reasonable goal, as not "suffocate" someone, then if no octo is found below 1000T we can search further. Like I said step by step. Regards Cedric |

Cedric,
I'm was not forced to run Octo, in fact, it gave me a lot of fun to run it in several machines but it gave me a lot of work. The client should be more easy to run, I already posted this somewhere here. Here's an example: I can run dnet in 6 machines (10 cores) in hidden mode with the advantage that I can forget it and the client keeps running and running, with octo I can't do that. Carlos,
I think it is possible to run in a "distributed" mode. We should opt for BOINC // other distributed computing platforms. The thing is that I don't dispose of a) the money for hosting & the necessary bandwith b) the means & the knowledge for setting this kind of thing up. I personnally think that BOINC is the ultimate goal of all distributed projects. I agree that there is a lot of administrative work involved. |
