Do we have to wait for both verifications to complete, before the official press release ?

No - one independent-software-and-hardware verification is sufficient. Ideally speaking, it would be nice to have 2 running at roughly the same speed, in case one machine blows up or coughs up an error of some kind that corrupts the computation.

well it's 7am in France now, so is this the number, or is it something else?

You're far too impatient. First, one must have some French fries, French kiss, Chirac's permission, an e-mail to George, a long decision process whether the announcement should be delayed, and deep thinking how to attract a maximal number of journalists.

i think you are more impatient, leaking it out on your blog, way back on the 20th of December, 2005.

at least i waited until the time T.Rex said it'd be ready to be told.

nevertheless, lumo, if you are right, i thank you for the leak.

also, IF you are right, tell us how you got it.

i actually think all this secrecy is silly. gimps should have revealed the number on the 16th of december. no need for cleverness, etc., just tell us.

http://www.mersenne.org/primenet/status.shtml still has

"Prime, UNVERIFIED : 1"

do we have to wait till 8am French time today for verification, or when Jeff Gilchrist's is finished on 31st of December?

write the digits of the residue from top to down instead of from left to right. Then convert them to binary.

Of course, next time we get a puzzle which is a little more difficult.
