Good luck. The nearly 100% literacy rate is commendable.

(Retina: how many mercenaries would it take? Barbados has no air force and ~300,000 population total. Might make a great lair. But beware of alliances with larger powers.)

Default first voice message sent over the airwaves

100 years ago ( sorry for the delay but the article was published late ) on Nov 5, 1921, RCA transmitted the first voice message sent over the airwaves.

On Dec 1, 1955, in Montgomery Alabama, bus passenger Rosa Parks refused to move from her seat so a white could occupy it. She was arrested by police and charged with one of the numerous segregation laws in effect.

I noticed the following two events listed consecutively at On This Day. I thought the second in particular might be of interest.

1933 Prohibition ends in the US when 21st Amendment to the US Constitution ratified, 18th Amendment repealed (5:32 PM EST)

(Ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment was certified on January 16, 1919, and the Amendment took effect on January 16, 1920.)

1969 Four-node ARPANET network is established

I continue to be amazed at the US 18th amendment.

Illegality, yes, both at a national level (e.g. Saudi Arabia) or locally and/or time-limited (e.g. Anglesey) but written in to the constitution? Americans!

Saudi Arabia didn't have anything like a written constitution until the Basic Law of Government (Al-Niแบ“ฤm al-Asฤsฤซ li al-แธคukm) was established by royal decree in 1992 (amended, 2013).

Article I of the Basic Law says (in translation; my emphasis)
Quote:
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a sovereign Arab Islamic state with Islam as its religion; God's Book and the Sunnah of His Prophet, God's prayers and peace be upon him, are its constitution, Arabic is its language and Riyadh is its capital.
You might argue that "God's Book and the Sunnah of His Prophet" do not explicitly forbid consumption of alcohol, but I imagine the Saudi authorities would beg to differ. I also imagine they would say that provisions in God's Book and the Sunnah of His Prophet are not subject to being repealed.

That said, I too am amazed that Prohibition was actually written into the US Constitution. I recommend Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition by Daniel Okrent.

The War on Drugs started in 1973 by President Nixon is still going on, so, although not in our Constitution, it has lasted over three times as long as Prohibition.

According to my reading of the Quran, the prohibition is against intoxication in general and, in particular, from "the fruits of the vine". A literal interpretation of the latter would permit consumption of, say, beer.

It is interesting, IMO, that a number of Islamic countries have thriving beer and wine production for both export and for local consumption..

That said, although I have read the Quran fairly thoroughly, I am very far from being an acknowledged Islamic scholar.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are 2 similar but distinct threads:
Official "This Day In History" thread (this thread, which is to note historical events)
Today, in Myths! (Originally titled "Today, in math!". Which is to note mathematically interesting dates.)

Please post in the appropriate threads. Posting in the wrong thread gives the moderators work to move posts.
