I think mistreatment goes with the territory. Forcing animals into intense displays for human entertainment is abusive and exploitative, whether it is racing, fighting, or whatever.

Apart from the idiom, the competitive racing of the actual rodents is still with us. And, judging by the following line, culled from a page devoted to it, I'd say it's here to stay:
