Default Move 31

We have 31...Kg7 and 31...Kg8 to choose between.

Maybe it doesn't matter much which one we play. If they reply 32.Qh7+ we are forced to play 32...Kf8 in either case.

One minor thing to be said for 31...Kg7 is that they cannot then move their bishop off the vulnerable f5 square to e6 with check.

What are your thoughts, team-mates?

31...Kg7 seems better to me at this time.

Yes, I agree too. 31...Kg7.

We could send our reply quickly then, I guess.

Yes, we are being mated shortly when they place their queen on h7 and their bishop on e6.

I would be happy for us to resign now if you both also think it's a good moment.

Okay.

davar55, I did note that you wrote this last move:
[...]If we see a mate coming I recommend we play it to the end;
that just makes the post-mortem easier with the final board visible.

Or not
Given that it will take several moves, and therefore presumably a few weeks, for them to deliver mate now, would you be prepared to reconsider this view?

Different players certainly feel differently about resigning anyway. It was a point of contention amongst the Toxic Geckos, of which I was a member, in the first game of this series, and you can read the discussion about it in this thread. In the second game we allowed our opponents to checkmate us, but that was because the checkmate was particularly attractive, and especially because it was quick and immediate. That is not the case here.

But the etiquette of resigning remains a contentious issue on which different players will disagree. What do you think about it now, davar55?

In regular games, I always give my opponent the courtesy of not just defeating me but of
acquiring the checkmate position. Most probably don't care, just wanting the win.

But in our long time period format, that perhaps wouldn't be fair to any of us.

If both of you are resigned to resignation, I too think we might as well.

Oh well.
