How much should one expect to pay for a used/refurb. macbook?

My nephew's 3-y.o. macbook fails to come out of sleep mode about every other time he opens the lid ... as it's out of warranty the mac store told him he's s.o.l. I suggested he look into getting a 2-year-old-ish used/refurb. unit, wonder how much is a "good" price for such. Cheapest refurb. macbooks on Newegg are close to $500, and the reviews are very mixed.

Here is the selection on Amazon.

He doesn't need a Pro or anything fancy - tips appreciated.

Here's a tip: All Apple stuff is overpriced. And, yes, I'm very much a troll.

though I would have gone with "you should expect to pay too much! but, that's also true of the new macbooks!"
