Right in order to make a clinical and rational decision of which database to use I will attempt to define a feature list. If people could post suggestions and recommendations (features not actually databases) then I will edit this top post to reflect them. I will split the features into MUST HAVE, GOOD TO HAVE, WISH LIST. So here goes:
MUST HAVE * DB Drivers for Java * Interfaces for C and PHP * ANSI SQL based syntax * Hot back ups * High performance * Solid stability * Free (or very cheap) * Reasonable security GOOD TO HAVE * Row level locking * Transactions * Replication (not nec. real-time... see WISH LIST) * DB that developers are familiar with * ODBC drivers * Outer Joins * Views WISH LIST * Real time replication * Sub-queries * Object relation mapping facilities |
