Hello,

I tried to use new version 30.3 build 6 on my Windows XP sp3 machine. The message is
"It is not a valid 32 bit application". What can I correct this.

Assuming this concerns prime95, same results here; update to Vista or newer. This is a known issue. Even Windows 7 is no longer being maintained by Microsoft. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...cle-fact-sheet

This has nothing to do with MS support or updates, or lack thereof, for the older OSes. It is the build settings (or the build system) for P95 that won't produce exe files to run on WinXP.

I've switched from MSVC 2005 to VS 2019 for Windows builds. What exactly is causing the Win XP error, I don't know. Is it fixable, I don't know that either.

True.

And George has a right to cease support of any ancient OS version, ancient processor type, and combinations thereof, for any reason. Providing support in prime95 of OS versions long since abandoned by their provider would be an act of remarkable generosity, considering systems still running them are likely to be relatively few, and likely are on quite old slow hardware capable of contributing very little to the effort. But if George enjoys it as a puzzle to solve, that's fine.

The end users risk system compromise by continuing to run an OS version for which no security updates will be forthcoming for issues the OS may have in common with currently maintained versions that get announced and patched in current versions.

What such an old system accomplishes may be cost-prohibitive on a $/GhzD electrical cost basis, even with the side benefit of space heating during the heating season. A sufficiently old system may cost MILLIONS of times more, and take prohibitively long, for a GIMPS assignment. As George told me long ago, there comes a point where we're better off saving money on electricity to buy hardware upgrades.

Mainly though: prime95 v30.3b6 works on Vista and later Windows OS now. No further effort by George needed.
