Hi - I'm new to this stuff so be gentle with me!
I have been suffering random BSOD so went through all of the driver update stuff. That didn't work so ended up 'factory resetting' my PC. BSOD remains - there doesn't seem to be ant pattern with regard to what programs are running. Ran Memtest overnight with no issues. When running Prime95 i get the following om #3 and #4 Worker:- [Mar 17 15:51] Worker starting [Mar 17 15:51] Setting affinity to run worker on logical CPU #3 [Mar 17 15:51] Beginning a continuous self-test to check your computer. [Mar 17 15:51] Please read stress.txt. Choose Test/Stop to end this test. [Mar 17 15:51] Test 1, 4000 Lucas-Lehmer iterations of M19922945 using FFT length 1024K. [Mar 17 15:51] FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4 [Mar 17 15:51] Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file. [Mar 17 15:51] Torture Test completed 0 tests in 0 minutes - 1 errors, 0 warnings. [Mar 17 15:51] Worker stopped. Worker #1 and #2 continue without problem. My PC is nothing special a DELL Inspiron 545 running windows 7. Nothing is 'tweaked'. Any clues to what the issue is or next steps would be appreciated. |

The error could be due to a build-up of dust, especially in the CPU heat sink and fan

Thanks for the suggestion - don't think it is as I recently cleaned the interior of the case when the BSOD first started. Any other ideas?

Can you monitor the CPU temperature? Maybe by using a downloaded software or by looking in BIOS. The former will show temperatures when Prime95 is running.

545 was not the best in the park in 2009 when it was released, and it is not now, either. I am with Paul here, check for thermal issues, maybe need new thermal paste under the cooler (4 years can be a lot of time for it to dry), cleaning the dust, see if the bearing of the fans are still good (engine oil does wonders, if you don't want new cooler, there is a post of mine here around, generally, if you search the forum, there is a lot of discussion about these thingies), etc.
edit: realtemp, from techPowerUp can be a starting point for temperature monitoring. Last fiddled with by LaurV on 2013-03-17 at 17:08 |

![]() The thermal paste/dust concept would have to be really severe for those to go out in the first minute - the heatsink would have to be almost entirely disconnects form one side of the chip for that to be the culprit. There migt not be a 4 core solution for this one short of completely reseating the heatsink in new thermal paste and prayer. That or try to get a replacement chip - not the easiest task for a dell. |

Your temperatures are fine. I would check the system voltages next.

You can find out your sytem voltages from BIOS or from downloaded software. What they should be depends on your system specifications such as RAM and CPU. If they are deficient you will need to replace the Power Supply Unit (PSU). Please find out what they are and post them back here.
