Default Good air-cooler good enough for overclocked i7-5820K

Hi,

I am building a pc that I want to use it for Prime95 24/7. It will be built with an overclocked intel i7-5820K (from 3,5 to 4,2-4,5 GHz) with a Cooler Master Hyper 412S aircooler (one of the best aircoolers atm i heard.) Is this cooler suitable or must it be upgraded to a liquid cooler (Corsair Hydro H80i)?

Thank you

You will probable be best off by running at stock. Why overclock by 20% when you will most likely get errors on long runs, while searching for the next Mersenne prime?

Overclocking the CPU is not nearly as important as buying fast RAM. Buy at least DDR3-2400.

The best anyone has overclocked that CPU so far is about 4.3 GHz, and it's not stable for long.

I have my 2400MHz RAM running at 1800MHz now as I was experiencing NMI errors and had a much unwanted reboot

i7-5820K uses DDR4, not DDR3.

thanks for the fast reply all. I go for a non-overclocked i7 4790K then and a 8 GB DDR3. Also a Corsair Hydro Series H60 cooler just to be sure my cpu won't overheat

I feel your pain. One of my Haswells isn't quite stable at 2400. I downclocked to 2133 and have had no issues since. BTW, G.SKILL was the manufacturer of the memory that I cannot make run as fast as the manufacturer claims it should.

Good catch.
hmm, maybe a 16GB DDR3 2400Mhz 2x 8GB (Corsair Dominator Platinum - High end) is a better option then. It is way more expensive but it has a better cooling function.

You need DDR4, not DDR3. It won't work.

DDR3 is apt for the http://ark.intel.com/products/80807/...up-to-4_40-GHz (see post #7)
