Maybe not just yet. Unlike rulers of old, the current monarchy does not appear to play a role in day-to-day operations of the central government. This is for the PM and his/her subordinates to do. The people are used to having a king and/or queen even if their role is one of ceremony and tradition only.

I was thinking they would wait until QEII's funeral and burial before elevating Charles to kingship.

As the Heir Apparent, he becomes King immediately on the death of his mother.

The idea that the monarchy is important for tourism is trotted out as a reason to keep them. They're probably correct, they are probably the biggest pull for the capital at least.

I'd rather keep the monarchy than have to live through the endless discussion about it if it was abolished (brexit trump and covid hold my beer).

I would have to agree. The monarchy is a big tourism draw and it doesn't hurt anything to keep it around. At least one other country to the north of the UK has a queen. Sweden, Denmark, or maybe Finland. She was in the news recently. Is that woman ever tall...

Is this forum called RIP or “musings over the passing of Elizabeth II Regina”?
