So, roughly .03 cents? Is that before or after Paypal fees?

Funny, I would think of a specific font size (1) as being of fixed size...

Anyway, as for grasping the notion of the size of 2^43112609 -1, there is of course the combinatorial interpretation of 2^n, namely the cardinality of the power set of {1, 2, 3, ... n}. So the new largest prime is 1 less than the number of possible clubs in a population of 43112609, where two clubs are considered the same if they have the same members. It shouldn't be too difficult to think of populations with sizes around 43112609.

I just received an unexpected letter in the mail from the Premier of Ontario (would be similar to the governor for your State in the US).

Quote:
Dear Mr. Gilchrist:

On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am very pleased to congratulate you on your team's discovery of the largest known prime number. This is an outstanding accomplishment -- one that you and your colleagues can take enormous pride in.

It takes a great deal of skill, determination and intelligence -- not to mention perseverance and hard work -- to make such a remarkable finding. Know that your commitment to this effort has earned you the admiration of your peers, your community, and the people of this province.

In Ontario we believe in celebrating our best and brightest -- those who unleash the power of ideas and usher us into the future of innovation. It is the talent and dedication of people like you that will help the Ontario of today, and tomorrow, prosper and thrive.

Congratulations once again, and please accept my best wishes for much continued success.

Yours truly,

[signature]

Dalton McGuinty
Premier
So congrats fellow GIMPSers from the Government of Ontario. Ernst, Edson, or Scott, you hear anything from Arnold Schwarzenegger? George, did you get a letter from Charlie Crist yet?

Jeff.

Why does it seem everybody thinks you discovered the prime? I've seen this mistake on so many news sites. How are they all thinking this? mersenne.org only mentions your name near the bottom, and the press release didn't mention you at all.
That letter sounds rather standard, with only the name and the first paragraph looking customized (maybe even just the part of the first sentence that's after the comma).

After such a letter, I'm planning to move to Canada...

First, I think this letter said things much better than most of the articles so far, at least it said, "your team's discovery of the largest known prime number". Besides the fact that is is not "my" team, but the team I am part of, it doesn't actually say my discovery.

I think most people don't understand the real process so they don't distinguish between someone who "discovered" the number and "verified" it, thus making the mistake.

Well a partially customized form-letter was still a surprise to receive. And now they have one already set to send when GIMPS finds the next one so it won't take any effort at all...

Jeff.

No letter from Arnie yet - he's too busy with some silly "California Budget Crisis" thing to write. We tried to get Sun interested in some PR [e.g. playing up the reliability of their latest servers which we did the DCs on] but they passed - seems they'd rather watch their share price decay toward $0. ;)

I think I need to sign on with your PR firm...

When I first saw the envelope from the Premier I thought maybe they were looking for people with experience working with REALLY large numbers to help with the economic crisis.

Too bad about the Sun thing, you would think that is something that could have helped them.

It looks like the prize rules for the first 100M digit prime have been set:

Awarded to a GIMPS Participant for the first prime discovered having at least 100,000,000 (decimal) digits. Rules in addition to the General Award Rules:

* GIMPS has undertaken an organized and systematic attempt to earn the $150,000 (USD) Electronic Frontier Foundation ("EFF") Cooperative Computing Award such that each Participant assigns all interest in this award entirely to GIMPS. Note that this Award may at current participation rates require an estimated 12-15 years of calculations before a qualifying discovery is made.
* No money will be awarded unless and until a GIMPS Participant's computer discovers a 100,000,000 digit prime, it is independently verified, EFF validates GIMPS' claim according to their rules, and pays GIMPS the award.
* Verification may take several weeks and publication in a suitable academic refereed journal as required by EFF rules will likely take several more months.
* GIMPS will redistribute the EFF award money into thirds as follows:
o $50,000 will be awarded to the discoverer Awardee of the 100,000,000 digit prime.
o $50,000 will be awarded to a 501(c)(3) mathematics-related charity selected by GIMPS.
o $50,000 will be retained by GIMPS to cover expenses and/or fund future or past awards.
* In the unlikely event that more than one qualifying prime is discovered at about the same time, then the winner will be the first to either send their result to the GIMPS PrimeNet server or to email their results to GIMPS.
So the amount given to the discoverer is staying at $50,000...

Also, $1,000 - $5,000 will be awarded for each new prime between now and the 100M digit discovery...
