Default BBC news coverage of prime discovery.

Record discovery coverage by BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7640183.stm

On BBC website this story is currently number 2 in the "most popular stories right now" list which is remarkable considering number 1 is "Treasury to nationalise B&B bank", hardly a slow news day.

This story is also running today on the BBC Ceefax teletext service.

Great work everyone of the "ET AL" who often don't get mentioned ;-)

UPDATE: It's now number 1 in most popular stories now for both read and emailed lists!

The story is linked from BBC homepage news homepage > "ALSO IN THE NEWS" > Computers link up to find huge new prime number

The references to Edson Smith being a "team leader" also seems misleading. I don't know of anyone else being involved in setting up UclaMath.

62963 machines registered on Primenet at the moment.

Has anyone been monitoring this figure for signs of a surge of new users?

Also, the two new primes now appear on Primenet v5.

Here is the guardian:

They actually did a relatively good job. There is only one error in the article: 243112609 - 1.

The registered computers count has gone up to 63524.

Anyway, here is the United Press International article: http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2008...0751222529701/

It has so many blatant errors it would be hilarious if it weren't for the fact that some people will actually believe it.

I'm going to bed. Graduate school starts tomorrow.

the print version has the same article but with the superscript correct.
I had a quick look and the rest of the UK broadsheets seem to have passed the story by, but it made page 22 of the Daily Mirror!

Less than 1 hour until the start of classes.

Primenet machine count has gone down to 63255. So much for a surge of new participants...

This figure fluctuates by 2000 or so as primenet reissues returned
exponents.
