Remove my thread from the Crank Forum

Just in case you can't see my post, I DEMAND of you to remove my thread from the Crank forum.

I honestly tried to solve a problem, and there was nothing wrong or cranky about it. It is a VALID, unknown method, only too slow, but so are EVERY OTHER FACTORIZING METHODS!!

You have no right to humiliate me for trying to solve a problem!!!!

You made me disappointed not only in the Mersenneforum, but in the whole mathematician community.

Please, remove my thread NOW!!!!!!!!!

Many great geniuses of history were considered cranks in their day. Galelieo was made to recant his heliocentric view of the solar system on pain of his head. History may declare you right and the rest of us wrong. In the meantime, you will get much farther by laughing at your detractors and charging ahead with your research than you will by being thin skinned and jumping up and down in a tantrum.

I don't think I am a genius.

But if someone thinks my thread is a wortless piece of crap, why not removing altogether??????

Does he find pleasure in humiliating people?

I agree with Eva (amateur) - putting that thread in the Cranks section was mean-spirited and uncalled for.

I would like to give a little history of the math subforum, especially because it has been repeatedly claimed that people who "haven't done their homework" should not be allowed to post in it:

When the math subforum started, Mike (Xyzzy, the originator of the forum) had been asking me some questions about ECM factoring, and he expressed a desire to have a part of the Mersenneforum devoted to math, so that people like himself with limited mathematical background could ask questions, explore ideas, and maybe even get help with mathematical concepts that they wanted to get clarified. After the math subforum had been running for awhile, a number of more serious threads devoted to ECM and NFS factoring had developed, and they were split off into the newer factoring subforum. I think it is wonderful that the factoring forum has become a resource that a number of quite knowledgeable people have used to share and develop ideas. However, the original math forum has continued to be more of a beginner's forum, and although we occasionally get some rather outrageous claims that can be characterized as "crank-like", the majority are more in the nature of "here's what I have been thinking about, what do you think?" sort of posting. Occasionally we get postings from people who I think may not even be very stable, but I don't think either instability or a limited background in math should be a reason to make fun of someone by calling them cranks. I would ask that whoever moved that thread, please move it back.

Can't help but agree with Philmoore. This should not have been done.

Anyone who posts a serious math related question should be given more credence than the "crank" forum. Even if they are amateurs.

Now that I think about it, I'm kind of perturbed. Not a single one of my threads wound up in here. And I've definitely had one or two that reached the flash point.

Maybe you should just do the obvious and have an amateur math forum. You could call the one for professionals the "pro math" forum or some other disingenious name.

Fusion - thinking thoughts about pleasing some of the people some of the time but all of the people....

I find myself reading fewer and fewer posts. This board has a few math snobs whose incindiary posts (and the reaction to same) stifle any attempt at Socratic method. If it gets beyond "I'm factoring X-Y to Z bits," look out.

the pre-requisites to discuss this subject intelligently, and who bristle at any
suggestion that they actually learn some math. Thay are also generally so
totally lacking in background knowledge that they don't understand why their
"attempts" are useless.

Socratic method applies to those knowledgeable about a subject.

I think you'll find that you have it backwards. The Socratic method is when the tutor asks questions which are carefully designed to guide a student to particular areas of study. It does not describe the process where a student asks questions of a tutor.

Unless, that is, you believe in the present instance that Amateur is the knowledgeable tutor guiding the rest of us students.
