Default need Pentium 4s for 5th largest prime search (largest proth)

Hi everyone,

Pardon me for posting about another distributed computing project here in GIMPS forums; I don't mean to take much processing power from GIMPS :)

I am still running a search for the largest proth prime (5th largest prime overall), over at:

http://www.williamgarnett.net/

We have found the then 15th largest prime (now it's #21). We could use help from Pentium 4s, since PRP runs fastest on them due to the SSE2 optimizations.

I have Brian Beesley crunching away with the sieving on 2 of his computers (we are around a P value of 700 trillion), and we need some more Pentium 4s for PRP testing. I believe we can achieve this final goal of getting #5 with a few more Pentium 4s on board.

If you are interested, just e-mail me at:
wfgarnett3@yahoo.com
with your processor speed and type of memory,
and I can get you started.

Thanks for the consideration, and excuse me for posting here in this forum.

Regards,
William Garnett

I'm not sure it's such a bad thing to recruit for other projects here (as long as they're limited in their scope as yours obviously is). Xyzzy actually seriously considered adding a forum for other DC projects, and most of the regulars are very aware of the other leading projects out there.

I'd be interested in converting one of my boxes over to your cause for a limited time frame (I'll email you about it later), but I was just wondering, how do you KNOW that it'll be the 5th largest overall? Admittedly, I haven't looked much at Proth numbers, so if there's a couple orders of magnitude between where you are now, and the 4th, then it makes sense, but you really seem pretty confident that you'll find it soon so I was wondering if you had a more compelling conjecture.

There is a list with the 5000 largest know primes (and selected other ones)

http://www.utm.edu/research/primes/ftp/all.txt

William is surching for proths with a N of 1677460 or a bit higher, which as you can see falls between the 4th and 5th largest Mersenne's

If it will be the largest proth if they discover one isn't sure of course, but the chance of finding a big prime is much higher then finding a new mersenne.

A few people are searching in higher regions for proth numbers already.
One of the other distributed projects is the search for Sierpinski numbers. There is a client which works in about the same way as GIMPS. Getting an exponent from the server, testing it and re[porting the result back. This project could also use a few slower PII's which are on 24/7. It's set and forget, and a PII400 could run current exponents in 4 days

Default Athlons can join too

As a second note, Athlons are wanted also.

On SOB, Athlon XPs work much better than P4s... I get 105,000/s with my 2.4GHz P4 but my pal gets 118,000/s with his XP1800...

I guess the client doensn't use the SSE2 instructions yet. I think Louie has been to busy with the new team functionality.

BTW, saw there is a TeamPrimeRib. :D
