I think I have it set up to determine if the requesting browser supports gzip and then it sends the gzipped version to the browser, which then (hopefully) uncompresses it on the fly.

So far the page works in FF1.5 and IE6.

If it works then we'll cut our bandwidth by half.

Thanks!
The last 4 digits are 0016. Is that correct ?
I am using Mozilla

The p30.txt file gives me this semi-error message:

Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /txt/p30.txt could not be found on this server.
Available variants:

p30.txt.en , type text/plain, language en
p30.txt.en.gz , type text/plain, language en, encoding gzip

I suppose that when I open the .en or .gz language versions, they won't be treated as a TXT file. In other words, users with non-English default languages have problems with your page.

Intriguing. Firefox works, properly getting with GZip. WGet works, properly getting without GZip.

WGet through "The Proxomitron" doesn't work (it gets GZip but doesn't decompress it). But that's probably a rare combination.

Are you sure that in your reply headers it states that the content is GZip compressed?

I'm using the "language method" described on this page:

http://www.everything2.com/?node_id=1690029

We don't have direct access to httpd.conf so we have to use .htaccess files. I'm not too keen on encapsulating the files in php.

My goal is for 99% success. I accept there will be some weird combinations out there that will break the scheme.

Lumo: What browser?
