I would guess reshaping of the cornea (e.g. LASIK), with cataract surgery a backup nominee. Whichever, I'm glad it went well!

No, but I was starting to go blind; one cataract fiber at a time.
But now I have Steve Austin Eyes

I can think of worse.

The mafia poked your eyes out to teach you a lesson?
You watched the sun directly for an extended period?
You witnessed the flash of a nuclear explosion?

Technically the first and third options are still "gone blind" I suppose, but more detailed about the reason. And the second option is just plain nasty, constantly teasing you with partial sight only around the edges.

Fair enough....maybe I was too harsh with Xilman

To my mind, the reading glasses contraindicated blindness. They wouldn't serve any functional purpose, and glasses worn for cosmetic purposes usually have dark lenses.

I guessed corneal reshaping because it's common, but not recommended for slight corrections. Visual problems like myopia are usually progressive, so the procedure might become worthwhile after many years.

I also guessed cataract surgery because of "after 53 years" since cataracts are usually one of those things people get if they live long enough -- plus your mention of reading glasses. My mom had worn glasses from childhood until her cataract surgery, after which she only needed reading glasses.

Again, I'm glad it went well!

I recently got a new laptop with a six-core processor and a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU. It's mainly for autonomous driving research but will certainly be crunching for GIMPS when not in use.
