Default Sleep budgeting...

So, I find myself in a situation where I have to be online at 0700 hours for meetings every Tuesday and Thursday starting next week...

I HATE mornings!!!

Also, I can't mentally come online until I've had at least one very large cup of coffee. This means I'm going to have to be out of bed and dressed (takes two minutes; jeans and a T-shirt is the virtual office dress code around here) by 0630. :shudder:

For temporal context, my normal routine is to be brewing my first pot of coffee at 0900 and be online and functional by 0930.

Thinking about a bit, I'm learning towards programming my time to come fully online at 0700 Monday through Friday. My modeling is it will be easier for my body to adopt a standardized sleep pattern during the week, rather than having two fairly massive saw-tooth bumps.

I've done shift-work before (0000 to 0800 for two weeks, then 0800 to 1600 the next two weeks), and once pulled a 76-hour "day" (recovering from poor project management...). But, I was much younger back then (weren't we all!), and I know I can't do that kind of thing anymore. (Or, at least, not too often.)

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Having to change one's sleeping patterns, etc?

Wisdom welcomed if it's out there!

  1. Move timezones - if not physically then by gradually adapting all stimuli around you
  2. Go and stay in a monastery - you'll end up thinking 0630 is late!
  3. Get a pet that comes to wake you up early every morning
  4. Make a cron job that wipes your disks at 06:31

Doesn't help me. Sunrise is 0548 here currently, so the Sun's up about three hours before I am nominally, and will be one hour ahead of me starting next week.

That happens through-out the night when a cat's had its latest snack, and decides it wants some "cuddles" before it falls back to sleep...

Unfortunately, this is not a reliable sleep-exit mechanism, as the kittens tend to be all tuckered out and fall fast asleep -- for hours -- as soon as the sun has risen.

Audio alarm. CD player alarm set to start playing Santana, or heavy metal, or whatever.
Placed out of reach, and set sufficiently loud to scare the cats. Test and adjust it in the days prior to "It must work today".

Early-warning alarms. Softer sound first, then louder more strident later in the sequence as the urgency increases. Also out of reach of a prone mattress rider.

What's your reward for being on time or early? If not sufficient, create additional.

Early to bed makes early to rise more practical. Consider setting evening reminders in your phone; 2 hours to pillow; 1 hour; 15 minutes & grab the toothbrush.

Mix drive sizes for more frequency range.

SO a morning person? Bucket of water handy for the SO to apply at 6:34. Your job to clean up afterwards if it's needed. (Get an anti-allergen plastic mattress cover and pillow covers to avoid mold & mildew.)

Could get kinda exciting, with water plus power electronics.

So glad my schedule is mostly my own now; not a morning person either, unless there's some very special motivation.

I too am drowsy during the day and fully alert after sunset.

I recently found out that my Chronic-Fatigue-Syndrome was the result of having Avocados for breakfast. Avoid taking it regularly in case that you do.

I've written elsewhere on this forum about this, but I'll do so again briefly here.

When I was in my twenties, I would regularly do a 36 hour day. 24 hours awake and productive, 12 hours stone-dead asleep. For weeks or months at a time.

I had very tolerant business partners, so they put up with this weird schedule in exchange for the deliverables I produced. The harmonic with most "normals" 24-hour schedules allowed me to be available for meetings two days in a row, and then one day skipped.

Ah, to be young again, and being able to abuse our bodies thusly...

All humor aside: Set a fixed schedule and stick to it. The earlier you have to be awake, the earlier you must sleep. I worked a factory job that began at 0700 and ended at 1530. My absolute latest rack time was 2130. I was up and around at 0500.

You have to be online by 0930. Start getting up at 0730. You don't have to rush anything. Bedtime, around 2300. Adjust this backward if you feel the duration is not enough. Don't vary this much on weekends at first.

A side story: During my trade-school days, I knew a man who worked at a power station which was about a 20-minute drive away. He worked what was called a "swing-shift." A week of 0600 to 1400. The next week was 1400 to 2200. The third week was 2200 to 0600. Then it would repeat. When he could come to class, he had the appearance of just recovering from a really long drunk. Bloodshot eyes with large suitcases below. Not everyone there had to do this. Only the plant operators did. There were 6 units inside the building. There would have been 6 operators. There was no way I cold to this, even for 30 USD per hour.

I wear a FitBit watch almost 24hrs to monitor exercise, sleep, heart rate, etc. Simply having access to my data makes me more cognizant of my sleep schedule and routines. Since I will be able to look back and see if I was sleeping routinely or working out enough even years into the future, it creates a sense of accountability to my future self.

Also, the device's silent vibrating alarms are very nice. I usually wake up to that (w/ phone alarm as a redundancy). The silent alarms provide a much nicer awakening process than music or a blaring alarm, in my opinion.
