This is very close to the version I learned as a child from my mother and grandmother. The latter came from back country Alabama. and sang something very similar to what the singer and collector, John Jacob Niles recorded here. The tune I learned was close to this, and a scattering of words are different.

Nice one, thanks for sharing it. If you like similar music, you must look for Betsy McGovern. I mean the real one, the Irish singer. She is not easy to be found on the web, beside of some small-audience/family shows where somebody else films her.
Sometimes in the past I had 3 albums of her, which I ordered after I heard her singing. One friend of mine here is Irish, he is very old, but he is still kicking around, at the time he was teaching English at a local school, and he had a TAPE - like in "tape-player", with Betsy singing, half English half Irish. I liked her voice so much I ordered the 3 albums I could find on the web. You may not realize what this means... I can count on the fingers of one hand the artists I paid for their music - in a region where people don't give a fun about copyrights, and in a century when you can listen to everything for free and watch everything for free on the web... So, the albums came after a while, and I was so delighted... Of course, I ripped them to mp3, and used to listen to them in my car on the way to work, for a while. Then changing houses, changing cars... changing habits... not long ago I was invited to a party and one of the women there played guitar and she had a nice voice, which reminded me of Betsy. We talk about, and nobody at the party seemed to know or heard about her. When I went home I looked for the albums, and they were nowhere to be found. Moreover, I looked on old hard disks and flash drives I had (and I found a lot of crap I was already forgetting about!) but no Betsy. Fu@#$@%ing idiot, I can't remember where did I put them, and I am still looking for a copy (but I have a lot of junk to sort through...) Last fiddled with by LaurV on 2019-11-22 at 09:07 |

I found her in searches, but only paid tunes available, so far. I'll ask my Irish obsessed friend if he, or his Irish wife have anything by her.
Thanks for the tip! |

I wasn't in a great mood since my vacation plans got cancelled. I had been looking forward to it for weeks, if not months. Since early February, almost every dream I remember having involved me going somewhere on vacation. And then the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" song played on the radio when I was on my way home.
A few boring ads played after the song ended, so I turned off the radio and somewhat absentmindedly got my phone to put that song on continuous repeat. It talked about things like "my fire", "the one desire", and "a heartache". So I was thinking, what is my fire and desire right now? What do I want to go my way, and what's giving me a heartache? The answer to those questions was right in front of me in the form of a freeway sign saying "Avoid travel. Stay at home." In an impulsive decision, I thought, "screw it", got off the freeway, and got back on going in the opposite direction, away from home. I didn't have a destination in mind and started singing along to my phone in some sort of escape from reality. I started to change phrases in that song to reflect my mood. At first, those changes were minor, but as the miles ticked by, more and more verses got replaced. It was becoming an odd, funny, sometimes contradictory, sometimes coincidentally logical, mishmash of lyrics like "Wanna go / Ain't nothing but a mistake" and "No matter the distance / I want you to know / As long as it’s there, I’ll go!" Two hours into my drive, I felt that half of the song had been replaced, so I turned around and headed home. By the time I was near my house, I pretty much got the whole thing nailed down, and I pulled into my driveway low on gas but high on happiness. Before doing anything else, I quickly typed up what I sang in the car so that I'd remember it. Strangely enough, the rhythm, rhyme, theme, and syllables per verse in my car singalong lyrics went together surprisingly well. After making only a few minor edits, the song parody was pretty much good to go, and the result is this: “I Want That Vacay” – MooMoo2 Yeah… My work is dreary A drag that’s weekly Another long day I want a vacay My desk is in such a mess There’s just too much stress So I say That I need a vacay Tell me why I didn’t win the lotto Tell me why I can’t retire tomorrow Tell me why I have to work on Saturday I want that vacay Don’t ring my doorbell I’ve checked some hotels “Vacancy!" they all say So I’ll book that vacay Gonna drive Eight hundred miles in one day Gonna drive Down every scenic highway Gonna drive From Florida to Hudson Bay I want that vacay Now I can see that there’s fun all around If you just open up the map, yeah New York or Chicago LA or Toronto As long as it’s there, I’ll go! I’ll rent that black car I’ll drive somewhere far I'll fly I'll fly, I'll fly, I'll fly On a discount airline! Must keep checking my spam mail For deals that match my pay scale (It’s a giant cruise sale) I’ll grab them now with no delay (oh, yeah) I want that vacay Wanna go Sunbathing on the beach sand Wanna go Dogsledding up in Iceland Wanna go Kayaking all around Norway (paddling around Norway) I want my vacay Wanna go Stargazing in the Outback Already got my bags packed Wanna go Straight out of town for holiday (out of town for holiday) I want that vacay So I’ll be on vacay BTW, the original song lyrics are at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3XtRYPbtfI Enjoy! |

Geezz! Rest in peace. Didn't know much of this guy's music in his youth, but he sings very nice, and he looked so much like Patrick Swayze (one of my favorite actors). Thanks for sharing.

The following is a parody of an old standard song: The Lion Sleeps Tonight..... I went digging for background. Original recording Solomon Linda&The Evening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrrQT4WkbNE The Weavers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jeooKgTPxk The Tokens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQlByoPdG6c Totally unexpected and with amusing 'ambient' jungle sounds: BERNIUKŲ CHORAS DAGILĖLIS https://youtu.be/HOIzRdDo_3I The Boys' Choir "Dagilėlis" of Šiauliai is one of the most prominent groups in the choir genre category in Lithuania and all Baltic regions.
