Who said anything about the balls deforming, I did not. I am simply saying that the balls do not tightly fit into the cubic space in the horizontal dimensions; and any horizontal movement of "stacked" spheres translates into vertical movement in all the layers above, this we must account for when establishing an inter-layer distance. Think as if the balls are water molecules and you may get my point.
