the quote you cited means checking a "wide" range means checking it to at least 50 bits. If nobody has checked it before, the text file will have you start at 1 bit and end at 50, thus the "xxxx,1,50" in the text files.

If someone has already run a batch, the file will read something like "xxxxx,50,53" which means trial-factor the number starting at 50 bits and ending at 53 bits. This implies all the numbers have been checked up to 50 bits.
