I would guess that a finance program either uses some fancy graphic tricks, or that it harnesses the amazing calculating ability of a GPGPU.

Photoshop uses the GPU to boost some processes, but to my knowledge, it runs into trouble when Prime95 is using all CPU cores. I have to pause some P95 workers to make the Photoshop family (Photoshop, Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom) reasonably responsive. Some of this sluggishness may also derive from high RAM usage in P-1, etc.
