My guess is that the disk is fried. Either that disk failure made the machine unresponsive before your power cycle, or you got rather unlucky that the power cycle cooked the disk.

32/31 is clearly a good idea here, as it reduces the Q-range needed by 10M or so; your listed Q-range ought to build a smaller matrix on 32/31 than 31/31, or you can reduce Qmax by 5M. If you also...

try ecm -h for options.

You want the -save, -savea, and -resume options. If I recall, you want to use the same B1 with -resume as you did on your GPU run so that gmp-ecm picks a reasonable B2; or...

If you don't tell ecm to save residues somewhere, there is no output file. The program just runs the curves and reports the result to screen.

You can redirect the screen output to a file to...

e-small should not be 134/266M lims.

Should we loosen e-small to 134/180M to make it easier to get some medium-sized jobs onto e-small? Does 134/180 still require low-enough RAM?

Forgive my ignorance, but is RDS asking for the mean score of, say, all GNFS-155 jobs we've run, and look at the distribution of poly scores for various jobs run at some particular size? That appears...

If I were working around a GPU as you are, I'd do up to T30 on CPU before getting a GPU involved at all.
1e6 for T35 is good.
I'd use 8e6 for T40, or I'd stick with 6e6 but send "-k 2" to GMP-ECM...

If you're looking into any study of saving time vis-a-vis ECM, I suggest you try:
1. skip the 1e6 curves
2. Do 400 @3e6 to cover the T35 and a bit of T40
3. Do 850 @8e6 for the rest of a T40.

How do you translate "a couple A40-months" from post #4 into a percentage of total effort? I'm serious here- I don't know just how fast an A40 is.

More generally, how does one convert GPU time to...

I can get 13*2^934-1 test-sieved. I was running part of a second T60 on it, but it's ECMed enough.

Try B1 of like 1e5 to test program function. Work your way up to see where your card's memory limit is. I'd expect 5e8 to work on most cards, 1e9 is a "probably". Is stage 2 still run on CPU? The...

I believe Ed's plan is to use cado sopt *instead* of msieve -nps. That is, run -np1, take that output and convert to CADO format, sopt, then back to msieve for -npr.
