Which factors to keep ?

I know that we can eliminate most numbers while trying to factor a Mersenne. ( A factor must be in the form 2kp+1, it must be 1 or 7 MOD 8, and must be prime. )

But is there a similar pattern...

if 'p' is prime and >= 5, then it is an ODD number.

Therefore (p-3) is an EVEN number

Therefore (p-3)/2 will always return a whole...
