For toe-dipping, entry level brand new GTX 1650 would be the better value. The performance difference (absolute and power efficiency) in mfaktc between 10xx & 16xx is no joke.

Let's take m=1000 so we have the largest search space.

When N is about 1e5 bits, the first n that satisfies m*n > b is n_min~=4500, and b_max ~=4.5 million

When N is about 1e6 bits, it is n_min...

Ah! You're thinking 99% as an exact number, whereas I'm pretty sure OP intended to give the general flavor of the structure of the number. Meaning, b^n part is the dominant term.

That still leaves surprisingly large search space.

How big is N? Less than 1000 bits? More than million bits?

How small is m? Less than 1000? More than million?

Sure, b can be composite. But a composite b must also pass a prime b check as a necessary condition.

For example, consider N=7*6^100+11. It will pass the b=2 check.

? N=7*6^100+11;

That will not probably work. Due to the presence of k, a large range of b's will be perfectly plausible for any given n.

I think we can slightly optimize the previous b-based approach to only look...

You have to start with b^k > |c| and check both N%b^k and N%b^(k+1) are the same. Of course, without any size limits on b or c, this is going to take forever to rule out all potential b's.

If b &...

No. You give a real valued expression in one variable, and it will find one real-valued solution where the expression becomes zero. So you recast your equation as 2^x-8=0 and just give the left side...

? ?solve
solve(X=a,b,expr): real root of expression expr (X between a and b), where expr(a)*expr(b)<=0.

Your sample equation boils down to 2^x+1=0, which doesn't have real roots. Let's try with...
