I know Wendell over there 3D printed some blowers to put server GPUs into desktop cases.

Looks quite a bit faster than a 5800X (https://www.mersenneforum.org/showpost.php?p=596448&postcount=857) at larger FFTs though!

If you're going with Zen 3, I'd suggest going with 3600 RAM, especially with 8 cores. That's an extra 12.5% memory bandwidth, and 8 cores will definitely use it.

Thinking of getting the 5800X3D?...

I'd probably go Intel for power efficiency, performance, and price, as far as 4 core goes.

If going AMD, you definitely want Zen 3, and outside of mobile, it's 6+ cores. There is the 5300G, but...

I don't think it would work out well. That's 6 cores per memory channel, usually at 2933 or 3200, so very memory starved. The 12 core 2920X would be a better fit. But I still wouldn't buy one these...

Doesn't the Pi Zero 2 W not also have a quad core A53 CPU? Though the Pi only has half a gig of memory.

The overhead comes in context switching. That happens when you make a system call, for instance, or the OS schedules a different process to run. Prime95/mprime hardly causes any context switching.

For what's it's worth, several years ago I went and did all the unrecorded work in situations where we had a record of "no factor to 2^62" and "no factor from 2^64 to 2^65" for exponents below 100M....

Speaking of voltage sag, I have the opposite problem: I get approximately 125 volts on each split phase, which likes to trip UPSes. I haven't seen any voltage drop when loads switch on.

You may be running into memory bandwidth saturation. I'd see that frequently enough with old c3 instances. Cloud providers also tend to use high core count CPUs, with 4 or more cores per memory...

Not all use-cases for a VPS require full CPU all the time. Like my backup VPS. It sits idle almost all the time, except when I'm pumping 1 Gbps to it over wireguard, which saturates its 4 vCPUs about...

Switching between hyperthreads of a core should have basically zero performance impact. All of the CPU caches are shared. So a bug, perhaps, but an inconsequential one.

Yeah, Windows doesn't handle more than 64 threads well, so I'd suggest disabling hyperthreading. They've apparently improved it somewhat, but it's still not as good as Linux.

I'm tempted to buy a 5800X3D. I suspect it will be a monster. It may be the chip to get if the price is reasonable.
