Wow. We are now testing numbers greater than [URL=http://primes.utm.edu/primes/page.php?id=25]Mersenne 32[/URL] found by Slowinski and Gage using a Cray super computer back in 1992 :whistle:

I've been prompted by email into writing a word or two about the status of the project.

Since starting a search for prime numbers of the form 3*2^n-1 just over a year ago we have found five new ones. After the initial sieving with Paul Jobling's NewPGen we have used three programs to eliminate the remaining candidate prime numbers, PFGW,PRP and LLR. From the start LLR was the most popular client being 10% faster than the others on Intel Pentium 4 chips because of George Woltman's highly optimised sse2 instruction set assembler coding; and LLR is a deterministic test -- showing instantly whether a number is prime or not, not requiring further proof testing with PFGW. A few weeks ago the project was going to take another year to complete. Then Jean released an updated LLR which for the numbers we are testing is 400% faster. This encouraged new participants and what was a year's project is going to be done in several weeks -- we will finish the initial goal of testing "n" upto one million in a couple of weeks time. Why not grab a range now before the run out? You just might find a really big prime number with over a quarter of a million decimal digits. The next step, the seiving of "n" between one and two million, is under way with hope that we can test to two million by the end of 2006. With even more help we can bring that date forward. As the primes get rarer, we would still expect to find at least one mega-bit prime :love:

Well, we have nearly tested to n=1 million. Thomas Ritschel tells me that sieving for n to 2 million has reached 17 trillion. As soon as the last few ranges are taken I'll ask Thomas to send me the first 100k so we'll always have something to LLR. :grin:

Any plan to get a network server running, like 15 k has?

I would but... I don't have a server to site it on. Does it require Windoze or linux? Also I'd like to see any bugs ironed out. Besides I can cope with our current way of reservation for the time being.

I can ask for a permanent IP for my own internet connection.
I actually run Windows XP Pro, but can set up a linux box if needed. Obviously my PCs are on 24/7.
I also have some spare space on my web servers to handle a web site for it.

I know it's not like having your own server connected to Internet, but if no better solution appears, I'm here.

However, the system won't be online until after I get back from australia.

I have the 15k llrnet server running in my basement. :whistle: (I do web hosting for some other stuff too.) Everything is on battery backups so I'm good for a few hours without power, unless I lose my connection from my ISP...

It is currently running it on a Windows 2k3 server, but I have issues when more then 1 person tries to connect to it at a time. I believe the Linux version of the server handles multiple users better, but I haven't had a chance to move the server. (Real-life takes over again...)

Let me know if you have any questions. Kosmaj has done some work on updating the scripts for the llrnet server to improve its reporting...

LOL. What I really meant was: how do I point my computer at it :redface: I wanted to use it to see how it behaved and just maybe if I really liked it I would move over to using the llrnet server software for 321.
