Queue management for e_small and 15e queues
 
It's time for a new queue thread!
I grouped e_small and 15e together because the queue maintainers can more easily decide which 15e queue to send to, and requestors need only decide which siever is fastest.

Guidelines for e_small versus 15e (subject to change):

Jobs clearly faster on 14e can still go to the d queue; if there is any doubt whether 14e or 15e is faster, post them here for e_small.

Candidates for e_small should use lims no higher than 134M and Q-range no more than 170M (example: 30M-200M).

Candidates for 15e should use lims no higher than 200M, per Greg's request, to keep memory use low. Unequal lim's that average 200M should use similar memory and are OK.

If you post a job in this thread, it is assumed you test-sieved with 15e.

I don't think the Q range nor LP size should be the deal-killer for e-small; but since memory use is advertised to BOINCers and overshooting the claims of memory use on 14e was a topic of complaint from the users previously. We should be hesitant about putting lim=134/268 jobs onto e-small.

That said, with one of these BOINC-competition things firing up, feeding the grid is more important this week than strictly following rules, so I point this out just for future "normal" times. E-small is more likely to run out right now, so we feed it.

I'll test-sieve a couple more jobs around SNFS-265 today, since it looks like the BOINCer army has arrived.

That was my fault for suggesting e_small. I seem to remember the 200 average lim but that is for 15e, not e_small.

I won't have anymore for e_small and 15e is currently building a long line.

During BOINC-challenge time, e-small was the right choice there for the job; with the benefit of hindsight we might just choose 134/200 or 134/180 for such a job, giving up a bit of speed to keep e-small fed without going too far over memory guidelines.

Edited (I thought initially you were talking about 13_2_875).
That may indeed be an error- I copied settings from a C185 and played with a couple lim and mfb settings, but didn't test -a.

If I get a good improvement using the other side, can the currently queued job be killed? It looks like it'll be a month before it sieves, but I dunno how the management controls work. I'll test the -a side overnight.

The Aliquot 4788:12574 job has been queued but it can changed if necessary prior to starting sieving. I too questioned if sieving on the -r side of a GNFS job was really the intent but stranger things have happened. Meant to PM @VBCurtis to verify which side should be used but then RL interrupted.

As to 13*2^875-1, I will hold off enqueuing it until the parameters are confirmed.

Testing on -a side has yield 10-15% better, and while sec/rel isn't directly comparable to my -r testing because different background tasks exist, I estimate -a is 20-25% faster than -r. That's a big whoops!

This is to be expected in general. The noise in the yield comes from the number of special-q in a range deviating from the expectation. The number of special-q for a given prime is the number of roots of the polynomial (algebraic/rational as appropriate) modulo that prime. So on the -r side you just get one special-q for each prime, but on the -a side the number of roots varies from 0 to the degree of the poly though the average is still 1. This gives a fair bit more noise on the -a side.

We can use the Prime Number Theorem to get rid of this noise - this goes for the -r side too:
Calculate the yield per special-q using the number of special-q that the siever gives on the line

It's natural log. PNT says the probability that n is prime is ~1/log(n), so C/log(Q) is indeed the expected number of primes in the range.

I think the long queue on 15e right now means this isn't a close call- we're still flying through these medium-sized jobs on e-small, while 15e is pretty backed up.

While the decision of where to send a job should remain fuzzy to try to keep any one queue from getting too long, I'd say that any job that sieves well at 134/134 lims with Q-range under 170M (say, 30-200M) is better on e-small than e from the viewpoint of keeping things moving.

One would expect in the medium term for the typical job to get tougher (since many projects work their way through smaller composites), so I doubt we'll get stricter on e-small as time goes on.
