Bereft of life, it rests in pieces!

We have taken the wiki offline permanently.

We do not have the motivation to diagnose and fix whatever is wrong with it.

If you would like to adopt the wiki we are more than willing to assist.

We have the last known good backup for the database and server, from July.

(The August backup is a backup of everything that is broken. Good thing we keep all of our backups!)

Maybe wikia.com is a solution?

They use the same Mediawiki software as Wikipedia, and Wikipedia is capable of displaying math formulas.

GP2 is right. Wikia probably would be better in the long term, given the problems you've had.

kar_bon 2018-09-01 07:36

I think Wikia isn't a good idea:
- the mass of advertising is overloading any page
- there seems no access to all areas of the wiki
- no multilanguage?

Many parts like php via Putty, DBacces via xammp (or like), installing extensions and other things may be restricted.
More than two years of my own Wiki (for jigsaw puzzles) I consider for a long time to create a math Wiki instead of my "Riesel and Proth Prime Database" Page, but the handling should include not only pages, but also a database via php for numbers/primes to show/store/add them.
My Wiki is multilanguable (by now German + English), all templates are created to make the users work easier and lesser: you don't have to know Wiki-syntax or language. By now there're 30,000 pages and counting every day. I have to upgrade to a newer version, too (1.25 now) and also plamming to move to an own domain, but not yet time to do so. When moved, I could install a math-Wiki on rieselprime then.

Not to get off topic, but I'm still working on that rewrite of the original RPPDb site. It's at http://happy5214.freedynamicdns.org/rppdb/app.php/. My MySQL server is broken right now after a botched upgrade (it only runs in safe mode), so I'll probably reinstall the OS in December. (MySQL is a prerequisite for KDE's Akonadi service, so I can't just remove and fresh-install it.)

Batalov 2018-09-01 15:30

I bet more than a half of the late wiki's database volume was taken by Raman's tables, full of color and fury, signifying nothing.
I bet more than a half of the late wiki's database volume was taken by Raman's tables, full of color and fury, signifying nothing.
There is something really weird going on with the wiki database because it is larger (!) than the forum database.

Any chance it has something to do with what Batalov suggested?

Or, perhaps, because the wiki wasn't terribly well locked down someone did a DOS on it (doesn't always have to involve a lot of net traffic; a fork bomb aka rabbit virus or "wabbit" is a classic example)?

Stepping back, is there any reason we're suggesting we run our own wiki, or move the *actual* *content* anywhere other than Wikipedia (where they have a team worried about this kind of thing)?

No, Raman hasn't edited in a long time those pages. It was another guy putting the biggest page with >3 MByte into the Wiki.

I don't know if only the pages for the whole space were measured, the MediaWiki software alone are ~250 MByte!

ixfd64 2018-09-04 00:51

We should probably also remove the link to the wiki from the GIMPS home page.

Having a separate one allows us to go deeper in some areas. Also, inject MP specific info into some of the other WP articles would not be appropriate.

How could I obtain a copy of that database? I was probably one of the last ones who created actual articles there (not just some esoteric number tables).

Also I feel ashamed and embarrassed for the Wikimedia Foundation: they have so much money in donations, but MediaWiki is such a dung...

irowiki 2018-09-27 17:57

I have experience with Wikis and would probably be able to fix/host it if desired.

There's a lot of information there that is useful for new people like me, and I've been resorting to archive.org for now.

Blackadder 2018-12-04 14:50

The wiki page had a great 'why help GIMPS' page, would it be possible to include that section on the site somewhere? I used to link that wiki page to people, but now I can't.

FYI, Mike has asked that I bring the Wiki back online. I have a data dump, but it's taking a little while to clean up the DB, and migrate to a contemporary code base.

Unfortunately the original domain expired, and was picked up by a domain squatter. But I've registered another domain which is appropriate.

I'll let everyone know once it's back online. Hopefully later this week.

Would you be willing to upload the 'Why help GIMPS?" page somewhere?

Have you seen the slow resurrection of the wiki here: https://www.rieselprime.de/ziki/Main_Page

kar_bon 2019-02-01 14:40

I've restored that page here, not yet all links available in that text.
Changed some links and the "Just 50 in all of human history" updated to "51": but this should be done by a template, which gives the current counting instead of editing such page everytime a new Mersenne prime was found!

kar_bon 2019-02-01 19:27

I've replaced the '51' with a expanded template, the abilities with such templates are enormous.

Is there a way to just have the number, ie 2[SUP]82,589,933[/SUP]-1 (and clickable), as an additional option? That would keep the main page up to date. (And maybe colourise the WR MP on the globe, in say orange or green [a non standard link colour].)

kar_bon 2019-02-01 22:34

New option 'pure' added with clickable link to M51, but the font color is not changeable, only for global, so all links would be displayed in that color.

Awesome! Thank you. Swiftly added it to my website.
