the primality test of the Mersenne number you are testing is almost complete, and you are dying for a pee, but you will not go to the loo until your computer reports whether the number is prime or not.

the police raid your house looking for a cannabis factory, suspecting you have one due to the amount of heat being generated.

(It is fairly common in the UK for the police to use thermal imaging cameras in helicopters to search for areas where a lot of heat is generated. A friend with a large amount of land, and big outbuildings, says he often sees them scanning his property. He waves at them.)

To be fair, that's not a simple task. This thread has 881 posts (including this one). That takes some time...

OTOH, it is doable in one long reading session.

"There is always something worse, than what one is complaining about." - slight paraphrase on the second part of this: "Nothing is ever so good that it can not be better, but nothing is ever so bad that it can not be worse." To complete the truth table - "Nothing is ever so good that it can not be worse, but nothing is ever so bad that it can not be better."

One of these four is a Slovak saying, but I'm no longer sure which one because I think all four of them are equally valid, and thus I think of them as being inseparable.

To the post -> Yes, that's even longer reading. But I've intentionally written: "OTOH, it is doable in one long reading session."

OTOH, it is doable in one long reading session.
Thank you. I was well ****ed off when I read the comment from Uncwilly. I thought the thread was suppose to be a bit of fun. There are of course umpteen references to the number of computers people own, the amount of heat generated, and the electricity cost. There's another about grow house, and this being detected by the electricity company. Well here, when people take over somewhere and grow weed, then normally fiddle the electric, so that's often hard to detect. Thermal imaging detects the heat, even if the metered electricity is low.

I thought the comment was rather personal. I think had anyone else written the exact same words, nothing would have been said.

Several things went through my mind after reading the comment from Uncwilly,

pkill -9 mprime and leave this project.
Finish exponents I'm doing (I submitted two earlier today, and a third will finish in 15 minutes), then leave.
PM Uncwilly and ask why was the comment made. It seemed rather childish.
Eventually I decided to ignore the comment, and carry on.
And I don't have any moral high ground here either. I also have posted repeat stuff and been called out for it. Such is life, we can't all be perfect. Life still goes on.
def LL(p):
x = 4
for i in range(1, p-1): x = pow(x, 2, 2**p - 1) - 2

PRP = lambda p: pow(3, 2**p - 2, 2**p - 1)
I had never heard of this team before, but their output is quite amusing. When you first heard about the Log4j vulnerability your first thought was "How could hackers hijack code that generates logarithms? "

As a matter of fact, I was thinking basically that! My first thoughts were about logarithms, then I was corrected by the video I was watching.

True story

In my dream I went to: Account / My Account / Results
to see if I've found any factors, expecting a couple; but I see over a dozen and it's so exciting I physically woke up.

PS sadly it was only a dream. I did not see a dozen when I wake up.

Dobri 2022-02-13 21:27

You just might be addicted to GIMPS if publicly saying that the chances of the smallest untested exponent giving a Mersenne prime are slim because it does not fit the logarithmic heuristic,
but actually thinking that the probability is 50% because it will give a Mersenne prime or not, and somehow having the feeling that will definitely give a Mersenne prime... until proven otherwise
.

bhelmes 2022-02-13 23:43

You just might be addicted to GIMPS if you note happily that your house has a 100 amper fuse by 220 volt and you ask all your 14 neighbours in the house if they could reduce their power consumption, because you need the whole power for a short calcualtion of your cluster.
It would be urgent, not taking long time and you promise you will make a house party afterwards.

As you know that your computer can run 5% faster if you decrease the temperature by 10 degree,
you bay a sleeping bag and a box of your favorite beer on monday morning,
open the window, drink a beer and go sleeping in the sleeping bag.

I remember one night I dreamed of factoring M1277 by myself. But on the next morning, I went to mersenne.ca and looked for exponents around 1100. I lost hope immediately when I saw how HUGE these factors are. And then I think we won't factor M1277 in 5 years.
