You try to run a primality-testing program on an Xbox.
You participate in this project.
After participating in Operation: Billion Digits, you become dissatisfied. Consequently, you start up a new project- Operation: Teradigit Prime! |
To start off, you hack into the Earth Simulator and use it to LL test M(3,321,928,094,941), the first trillion-digit Mersenne number (1,000,000,000,017 digits!).
By the way, does anyone care to estimate how long that test would take using the Earth Simulator at full power? |

You actually Trial Factor M(3,321,928,094,941) to 72 bits on your work P3 because it was posted to a forum. Guilty  No factors found. |

Guilty  No factors found.
Really? Current computers are powerful enough to factor trillion digit Mersenne numbers?! And does anyone still want to estimate how long an LL test would take on that number using the Earth Simulator? |
You can't wait for IBM to finish building the Blue Gene series supercomputers. (So you could hack into them.)
|
For some odd, inexplicable reason, the international man vs. machine chess championship is interrupted when the computers suddenly stop what they are doing and start searching for Mersenne primes!
|
... you start a new DC project to try and factor not MM127, but MMM127!
|
...you're working on someone else's computer, look at the Task Manager, and see that the CPU is at 100% utilization. Your first thought it that this is perfectly normal, but then you realize that the computer is not running Prime95.
|
You write your own software to manage your own GIMPS related work.
You make charts and graphs to show progress. You  when you realize that you are now in the top 1000 of credit in PrimeNet (L-L and Factoring) and GIMPS. :geek: :geek: |

But just wait until my biggest exponent ever finishes in a few days! |
in a "former lifetime", you actually used a P90 to check 2 exponents in about 1 month each.
That was under a different name, but I did write to George to get the 0.2 credit moved to my current account.... |
You still use a Pentium 90, 24/7!
(Not guilty, but my slowest is a PII 166.) |
Sigh, I'm only at #2146 at the moment. But just wait until my biggest exponent ever finishes in a few days!
Its finished! A 24M exponent! But my computer says its composite... Still, that brings my rank up to #2002! |
... when you took G.Palameta's C-port of E.Mayer's F90 implementation
of the CF DWT LL test and rewrote it in true C style, reducing ~85 hard-to-read pages down to ~20 "readable" ones, but would like some clues on how to actually make it run faster, even on my PC snail!! :help:
You fully understand the previous post. |
You see a car license with '971' on it and you feel like you are being taunted.
|
You get a customized licence plate with '20996011'
|
You are outraged when your request for a license plate number with 6,320,430 digits is denied.
|
After you write a program that tells you that 7 is the digit that occurs most frequently in M40, you answer a bunch of questions wrong on a math test so that you can get 7/10.
|
After reading that, you wonder if 4 is the second most frequent digit in M40. You also wonder how many occurances of 47 there are.
|
Your first thought upon reading this is that it should make taking over those supercomputers/clusters you've been drooling over MUCH easier.
|
You use machine armies to take over the world so you could harvest energy, or rather, brain power, from humans. (It could also mean that you're addicted to The Matrix series.)
|
You write a petition to the government to ban all names except Mike.
|
You start using your middle name of Mike for all official activities.
|
You name your boxen "Mike 1", "Mike 2", ...
|
At birth you name your daughter Mike.
You spend the college money that grandma and grandpa give her on a monster. |
At birth you name your daughter Mike.
You spend the college money that grandma and grandpa give her on a monster.
That of course being pronounced MEE-ka like in the recent movie EuroTrip? |
At birth you name your daughter Mike.
You spend the college money that grandma and grandpa give her on a monster.
When the time comes for her to make her college applications, you wake up at 1:00am one night... You stealithy pace towards a typewriter (so as not to waste CPU power). Then, you type a college application essay that basically says "My name is Mike and I have a very powerful computer. Therefore, I will probably discover a record prime. Therefore, you should accept me." Then, you print off multiple copies, mail away the applications and sneak back into bed without anyone noticing. |
You check out a thread that is titled
QUICK!!!!! EVERYONE!!!!!!!!! LOOK!!!!!!
at least ten times per day for the last week.
|
You change your name to Mike Findlay
You change your coworker's computer from DC to LL because his name is Mike. You Borg all the CPU's in your company that are used by Mike's. You rename your company to "Mike's Prime Industries Ltd." |
...You suggest to rename previous company name into "Mike's Prime Factory Ltd."
|
You custom build computers, but there is always a 4-6 delay in shipping after they are finished.
They are only finished after a 4 week "burn-in" period. |
You are a tech support nerd and you keep the latest version P95/mprime on your "bag of tricks" CD.
|
You start looking for a spot for your M41 poster.
The latest M poster is always above your bed and you have the rest in order on a wall. You have an M poster autographed. You have them all autographed. You have measured out an area for your M42 poster. |
You have them all autographed.
That includes autographs from the first people to realize that 3, 7, 31, 127 and 8191 are primes (you refuse to give out their names) as well as autographs from Cataldi, Euler and Lucas. You run out of space for new posters; so you arrange for a new room to be built to prepare for M42. |
You run out of space for new posters; so you arrange for a new room to be built to prepare for M42.
Never, there lots of wall space in the "farmhouse". |
To motivate your computers to work more quickly, you play a tape recording of M41 (5 digits per second) and challenge your computers to find M42 before the recording finishes.
|
To motivate your computers to work more quickly, you play a tape recording of M41 (5 digits per second) and challenge your computers to find M42 before the recording finishes.
Since that's less than 17 days, you might wanna try something else... |
Oops, I forgot to divide by 86400...
|
You recruit and hire only  Mike's  for your company so that they increase the chance that your company's PC's will find M42.

And you promise to get her her own new Mersenne next year. |
If somebody who you haven't yet converted to GIMPS shows you this link: http://www.progressquest.com/ (a game that you don't do anything to, you just leave it running overnight) and you have nightmares for weeks.
|
Of course, you would never play an online game. They waste CPU cycles!
|
You and a friend create decorative coasters made out of dead CDs. The tops of the coasters are made out of (insert crappy proprietary ISP here) CDs in an attempt to rid computers of these evil cycle-stealing programs.
(guilty) |
You gently recycle said CD's to help insure a cleaner environment to welcome M42.
|
You discover so many new Mersenne primes that you need http://www.google.com/url?sa=U&start=1&q=http://www.lacie.com/products/range.htm%3Fid%3D10033&e=42 to store all the exponents.
|
You are a bit unhappy with the movie The Core, not (just) because of the shortcomings, but because Keyes, the "always right" professor, uses 1 as a prime number. -- guilty --
Well, Keyes is fictional. Blame it on the producers. |
You continue to run your gigantic GIMPS farm, despite the danger (http://news.com.com/Is+the+dust+on+your+computer+toxic%3F/2100-1041-5225799.html?part=dht&tag=ntop) it poeses to your health.
|
You wonder how much electromagnetic shielding would cost so you can line your farm lab with it to protect your nodes from evil EM pulses that would short them out. The decision to buy or not is, of course, totally dependent on how many nodes you could add for the same amount of money and whether you can justify the lost potential output.
|
you do everything in your power to increase production include trying to make small cluster which fails you soon scheme to buy off the shelf compents and try again...
|
You resurrect his thread.
|
you seek ways around company firewalls and site-blocking to access this website
|
To refuse to dial any phone number unless it is prime.
|
Even if you're in a hurry, you refuse to microwave any food at a power level higher then 7 (out of 10), since 8, 9, and 10 are *gasp* not prime.
Additionally, you insist on microwaving it for a prime number of seconds. |
You try not to move your mouse or keyboard too much because that makes the CSRSS.EXE process use 2% of your CPU time for half a second.
|
You are happy that the US has entered hurricane season because it'll force GIMPSers in the southeast to shut off their computers, thus allowing you to get ahead in the stats.
|
You're sad, because it knocks George off-line and slows developement of a new faster version that speeds overall throughput.
|
You stalk your computer every time it's close to finishing a result.
|
You no longer feel ashamed of the number 971.
[post]28650[/post] |
You set your "Iterations between screen outputs" to either 846 or 14593 because eventually Prime95 will display Iteration 12345678.
|
...you run prime95 as much as possibily and hurry home(walking) to get your computers on and crunching.
|
You set your "Iterations between screen outputs" to either 846 or 14593 because eventually Prime95 will display Iteration 12345678.
Upon reading something somebody said in this thread, you proceed to do it. |
... you ask George to implement the feature which shows every Iteration that equals a Mersenne prime exponent.
|
You set "iterations per screen output" to 1. Then, you practice with a camera for hours so that you can take a picture exactly when you reach 24036583.
After accomplishing that feat, you realize that you could have just set the iterations per screen output to 24036583. |
...you run prime95 as much as possibily and hurry home(walking) to get your computers on and crunching.
You cringe at the fact that someone else turns their computers off. What possible reason could they have to want to shut their computers down and lose crunching time?? (no offence moo...) |

... you factor your competitors' LL tested exponents in the hope of making them lose credit:

you are adicted to prime95 if you grive because your pus fell on to cpus cooler knocking htat off falling smashing vid card causeing it to shot out then the thermal kill swhich goes on and prime 95 stops running

It does. The computer fell apart, causing Prime95 to stop running: a MAJOR problem! |
You credit dominicanpapi82 for using an old version of Windows to save memory.
It does. The computer fell apart, causing Prime95 to stop running: a MAJOR problem!
Also, most folks don't have their PSU's loose, such that they can fall on to the MB. Sounds like a caseless cruncher. |
3 of the screws on the psu for one of my comps kinda are strippeed lol thats were that one came from only i phrazed it wrong.
|
...you make violent threats to your computers in other countries that have overdue exponents and haven't communicated with the server, like they should have.

You're mad because, mood swings due to U.S. electoral polls are much less stable than mood swings due to Prime95 test results.

You order that more people post to this thread so you can enjoy there antics.

actually its a poor psu caseing made of a softer material the screw holes stripped so it hands a tad funny only one real screw left there thats good i will end up replaceing it sometime. |

While in class, your apartment has a small power outage. Now you have been trying hard to keep your task manager clean so that your computer can finish a result before you leave on a long vacation on the 10th of December. Because of the power outage, the current projected finish date for the exponent currently being worked on is precisely 20 minutes later than the time you expect to leave for the airport. You then become excited because by going on a long weekend for Thanksgiving from the 25th to 28th of November, you can put your computer in safe mode and, on your computer, this speeds up Prime95 by 0.5% idle or easily over 10% not idle. You then try to calculate the gain in time due to your Thanksgiving vacation and it's just enough so that you finish your exponent before having breakfast on the 10th of December.
|
While in class, your apartment has a small power outage.
You daisy chain 5 UPS devices so that you can let P95 run during a power outage long enough to fire up your generate that you have bought only to serve your CPU. :geek: |
