You just might be addicted to GIMPS if...
This thread is just like those redneck jokes, except GIMPS specific...
Give it your best shot! |
...your monthly electric bill is more than your monthly rent/mortgage payment...
|
You change your entire farm from consumer friendly AMD to the demon seed Intel. Because Gimps is SSE2 optimized.
|
... you start enumerating the 64bit LLRs of the Mersennes up to M7000000, because you just can't get to sleep.
|
you can recite all the digits of all the Mersenne primes.
|
you never turn the heaters on in your house.
|
You sold all your heaters for cash to buy more PCs.
|
hey, I lost the "other" topic about DC addictions, could anybody please point me to it again?
Luigi |
You've got so many mersenne exponents reserved, that you are sure to win the EFE, but by that time the universe will be dust, and E=mc^2 is so hard to find that you can no longer run your INTEL P10^n.
 |
...your child's first words are "Lucas-Lehmer"
|
It's winter time and you're still running the air conditioner...
|
... you persuade your dad that a dual Xeon system _is_ the minimum requirement today to print his shopping list
... you convince greenpeace headquarters, that prime95 is a distributed neural net to simulate drug effects in primates. No more primate research labs :) |
. . . you buy each of your six children a PC, that they can use it for whatever they want, *but* stipulate that they must leave it powered on running prime95 at all times.
|
. . . you buy each of your six children a PC, that they can use it for whatever they want, *but* stipulate that they must leave it powered on running prime95 at all times.
... and then mourn the CPU cycles lost every time they actually use the thing. (Been there ;) ) |
... and then mourn the CPU cycles lost every time they actually use the thing. (Been there ;) )
Geez! Isn't that the truth! |
Hey, I have one kid with 6 computers, what is wrong with that??
 |
... Buy a set of Bose noise cancelling headphones so you can sleep with the bedroom door open (computers are in the dining room...)
|
You build this
Prime Monster |
. . . you buy each of your six children a PC, that they can use it for whatever they want, *but* stipulate that they must leave it powered on running prime95 at all times.
You have more children so you can justify buying more computers.
|
You cry, just because M40# is composite
:( :( :( :( |
you need counselling from all the traumatic stress of watching stats, and worrying about if you might be able to find a prime.
|
... if you've been a participant since before PrimeNet was public. :D :D
|
You make more than three posts in this thread!
|
hey, I lost the "other" topic about DC addictions, could anybody please point me to it again?
Luigi
http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?a=tpc&s=50009562&f=122097561&m=1650910435 |
Thank you dswanson!
Luigi :D |
... you now dress in black and mourn for M40.
|
You subtly encourage your spouse's suggestions that you get a faster processor so the other computer can be upgraded with your old processor.
|
...your child's first words are "Lucas-Lehmer"
...Or you name your child Lucas Lehmer {insert last name here}... ...and it's a girl. (I suppose the obvious nickname in this case would be "Elly.") |
... you DO NOT read this at all because THIS would slow down YOUR machine......
|
...you spend 3 months online using a Videogame console because you only have one computer to run.
|
... you DO NOT read this at all because THIS would slow down YOUR machine......
You add lots of fanciful and elaborate entries to this thread, knowing that reading them it will slow other people's machines down, allowing you to get ahead of them in the stats. |
You add lots of fanciful and elaborate entries to this thread, knowing that reading them it will slow other people's machines down, allowing you to get ahead of them in the stats.
So THAT'S what prime_monster is up to... http://www.mersenneforum.org/viewtopic.php?p=5005&highlight=#5005 Watching the bananas increases my per-iteration time by 25% !!! |
...Or you name your child Lucas Lehmer {insert last name here}...
You name your third born Ernst and your fifth born George and your seventh born Guillermo and then you begin to ostracise all your non prime children.... |
... you worry about whether Prime95 will start thrashing while you're editing your latest contribution to the "It was a dark and stormy night ..." thread.
|
You agonize over wheter to maximize the prime95 window and give it a higher priority, or minimize it so it doesn't have to waste cycles updating the screen. To minimize or not to minimize, that is the question.
|
...You have done at least three of the things others have posted on this list...
|
You've waited for a year to be invited to beta test Climate Prediction Net only to feel guilty when asked becuase you don't want to take away from GIMPS.
|
When you leave your computer for a while, you make sure your brower is on a quite web page (such as www.mersenneforum.org) so your computer doesn't waster cycles displaying animated gifs, run java, etc.
|
You're distressed at having to reinstall Windows because you botched the migration to the new mobo and Barton, but only because of the lost time from Prime95.
|
You're distressed at even having to restart Windows periodically, because of the lost Prime95 time!
|
You currently have an entry in Task Manager that looks like this:
Prime95.exe 688 99 2175:16:47 11,748K  |
You know Prime95.exe has been running for over 2000 hours but you will not even load Task Manager to have a look at the numbers because that would waste cycles!
|
You just might be addicted to GIMPS if...
...you turn off Smooth Scroll for internet explorer. (I wonder how many people are going to turn off Smooth Scroll after seeing that :D ?) ...you run text-mode Linux. ...you rename the START menu to the GIMPS menu. ...you bought a 1GbDDR stick just for P-1 stage  for a 1.5% extra chance of clearing an exponent without LL :? . ...you don’t even have a monitor, keyboard, or mouse for fearing that you might be tempted to steal some of Prime95's cycles, because you save your money for more monitor less machines. 8) ...you buy CPU's from Intel claiming that you are a retailer  , but you are really just using them for Prime95 :D . ...you come up with multiple Red-Neck GIMPS jokes for the same post not able to wait untill tomorrow to post your next one  . |
...you buy CPU's from Intel claiming that you are a retailer  , but you are really just using them for Prime95 :D .

;) |
They have just had a record snow fall in your part of the country, but for some reason, it has all melted in the area around your house!
|
You start an organization to shut down the nearby nuclear plant. Not because you object to nuclear power -- you just want to get your hands on that cooling tower!
Of course, once the plant shuts down, there won't be enough power to run your DC farm ... |
...your monthly electric bill is more than your monthly rent/mortgage payment...
Mine sometimes IS - but I own the trailor outright and my monthly lot rent is LOW.... 8-) Sadly, I do still have to run the furnace for 2-3 months in the winter. |
... your wife (or husband) tells you that you were talking to her (him) in your sleep, trying to convince her to let you buy another computer and use more electricity to crunch more GIMPS.
|
...you have detailed plans of taking over Earth Simulator  to surpass Team_Prime_Rib's Global Status in 5 days  .
|
Better yet, when you refuse to visit pages where the animated crap can't be turned off with stop or esc ...
When you leave your computer for a while, you make sure your brower is on a quite web page (such as www.mersenneforum.org) so your computer doesn't waster cycles displaying animated gifs, run java, etc.
|
... you buy 30 1-HE racks and convince your wife that those boxes are called 'underfloor heaters' and will be used in the new bathroom...
|
...if you have a reefer loaded with mobo's and CPU crunching for GIMPS at sub-zero temperatures 8) . When you go R.V.ing never fear, your computing reefer is here.
|
..if you are wondering whether your credit card number is a Mersenne prime..... ;)
|
You post a lot of bananas to get up in the leaderboards...
And match Mhz with the current year and decimal places... |
If your Xyzzy and write a script to get your stats every hour, or your Xyzzy and start a forum for GIMPS, or your Xyzzy in general :)
clowns789: Like this?    |
You post a lot of bananas to get up in the leaderboards...
I certainly did
And match Mhz with the current year and decimal places...
I have approximately 45GHz crunching on varios projects - at home - You could possibly say that I am addicted ;) heretic |
I have approximately 45GHz crunching on varios projects - at home -
You could possibly say that I am addicted ;)
You've got me beat - I only have 16GHz at home, all devoted to GIMPS. But, for the 3rd time this year, I'm about to load my 16GHz into the car and drive it halfway across the country, just so I can keep it near me during extended off-site business assignments. And believe me, there's a real sinking feeling that goes with flipping the power switch off on 16GHz, knowing that it will be off-line for at least two days. Addicted? Just maybe... :D |
Your addicted if you put a portable generator and line conditioner on the roof of your car so you can run your farm as you drive cross country.
|
Last year I did some work, five weeks, at the Red Dawg mine in northern Alaska - have a look at a map, try to locate Kotzebue ... I left my machines on and regularly checked the primenet report to see if the boxes were updating, slow as hell getting the report over satellite ... when the power went off, I had to phone my brother and walk him through the powering-up process ...
I do not have a distributed computing problem ...
But, for the 3rd time this year, I'm about to load my 16GHz into the car and drive it halfway across the country, just so I can keep it near me during extended off-site business assignments.
|
Your addicted if you put a portable generator and line conditioner on the roof of your car so you can run your farm as you drive cross country.
Believe me, I've daydreamed about it. Not sure if the car air conditioner could handle the heat load, though. I do leave the laptop plugged into the cigarette lighter, so the trip's not a total loss. |
 ...if  you  put  a  banana  between  each  word  hopefully  slowing  your  competition's  machines  down  . :D
|
If you buy a small stereo so you can listen to some music while working on the computer and not have to use CPU cycles with the computer's CD drive. 8)
|
If you buy a small stereo so you can listen to some music while working on the computer and not have to use CPU cycles with the computer's CD drive. 8)
Geeeee...... That is what I do a couple of months ago.  P.S.:Winamp increases my per-iteration time by about 56%........ |
P.S.: Winamp increases my per-interation time by about 56%.......
....if you know how much your computer's CD player increases your per-iteration time. :D |
When you leave your computer for a while, you make sure your brower is on a quite web page (such as www.mersenneforum.org) so your computer doesn't waster cycles displaying animated gifs, run java, etc.
You *gasp* leave your browser on at all when you're away from the machine? That's a waste of CPU cycles!
...you run text-mode Linux. Twisted Evil
I do that on my LINUX boxen ANYWAY. 8-) |
... you keep your laptop PC in the refrigerator.
|
:D Done that ;)
|
What does keeping a laptop in the refrigerator accomplish? I keep hearing about this but it doesn't make any sense to me. :?
|
What does keeping a laptop in the refrigerator accomplish? I keep hearing about this but it doesn't make any sense to me. :?
According to DC lore, it prevents your laptop CPU from throttling down to a lower speed because of overheating. (Fans in laptops are usually pretty wimpy) |
... you get up early (6:00 UTC = Lisbon time zone) in the morning on a Sunday just to grab a first-time test exponent below M39 you know will be expiring that day
|
... you stay up (2 AM Eastern time; when I lived on the East coast) to grab expiring exponents.
... you automate the process of grabbing expiring exponents so you don't have to stay up late. |
...if you port p95 for your video card hoping that you will clear more exponents without suffering gaming performance :D .
|
... if you switch to console gaming from PC gaming to free up more CPU cycles.
|
...if you buy a second CPU for gaming so you can keep prime95 bussy on  ... WAIT  ! That CPU should be running prime95 too :D !
|
I feel SO behind - "only" have about 14 Gighz total, and over 1 Ghz of that is in K5 machines (at ACTUAL CLOCK, not PR ratings).....
8-O |
......if you set Marin Mersenne as your computer's wallpaper.
|
... someone innocently asks you whether you have a hardware problem and you reply, irritated, "I don't have a hardware problem. I can stop buying hardware any time I like!"
|
...if you managed to biuld a P4 machine for all your friends with some  ," Special Software included at no charge! "
|
... If you suggest that your fiancee do her bridal registration at motherboards.com.
|
...If you offer to upgrade a friend's computer and "generously" offer to take the leftover parts off her hands (so you can build another GIMPS machine.)
|
...if you managed somehow to change Dell's master copy of Windows XP to put prime95 on it  . Now all of Dell's new machines run Prime95 for you  . You don't have to build cheesy custom P4 PC's anymore :D .
(I hope i didn't give anyone a brilliant idea :D ) |
...you don't live in the northeast US and think that the power outage there will help your place in the standings. :D
...you only use library computers to get on the internet, to save cycles on your home machines. :) ...you gather up all the out-dated machines at work and put them in a closet to make a sneaker net factor pharm. |
...if the power outage in the Northeast was caused by you bringing all of your P-4 systems online.
|
...if you went online (missing 20 phone calls) just to check to see if version 23.7 is out
|
...if you went online (missing 20 phone calls) just to check to see if version 23.7 is out
...if, as soon as you read the above, you reflexively checked the downloads page for version 23.7 |
...if you really did  :D
|
...if you bought a framed "gray" poster from Perfectly Scientific only to show how big a Mersenne prime can be to your friends...
|
...if you ordered a poster, but couldn't wait for next day air to arrive, so you long handed it yourself  .
|
... you start this thread http://www.mersenneforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=1030
|
You start figuring out how many parts you need to cobble together another system so that your son and your father can be the undisputed "widest age range in one family running GIMPS" (at least until someone else posts a wider range).
|
You get up at 3:00am to watch the first 77M test complete and send it's results to PrimeNet.
Dan 8) |
...you always get up, whatever time it is, to watch each of your exponent tests complete
|
...you get your phone number changed to a prime number.
You are really addicted to GIMPS if you get it changed to M36, M37, or M38. |
...if after 4 days of no internet, the first thing you do is check for v23.7
|
...if this is what happens when you bring your farm of P-4's online:
http://gbe.dynip.com/Misc/P4sOnLine.jpg |
...if you upgraded from dial-up to an ISDN connection, so if the phones go out you will still be able to send your results for Prime95  .
|
...you check and see if your phone number is prime or not.
